Jake One

Birth Name:
Jacob Dutton

Born:
Seattle, WA

Biography

In these days of disposable music and ringtone rap very few producers are able to build a sound. Seattle producer Jake One is one of those exceptions. With an impressive and diverse discography that includes artists from 50 Cent to De La Soul, Jake has managed to bring his sound all the way from the underground to Billboards top 10. Combining the ethics of his early influences DJ Premier, Dr. Dre and DJ Quik with a touch of today, Jake has been able to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

While Jake is widely known for being a mainstay on G Unit affiliated projects, he got his start working with local talent in Seattle for the Conception Records label in the late 90's. From then he started to make his way on to the national scene with extensive work with the Gift of Gab and a unlikely rapper, wrestler Jon Cena producing Cena's ring anthem "The Time Is Now" among others. Jake's first taste of the big time was a spot on G Unit's triple platinum album "Beg For Mercy". Appearances on albums by Young Buck, 50 Cent, Lil Scrappy, E-40, De La Soul and Freeway followed firmly establishing Jake's place in the hierarchy of top producers in hip hop. 2008 marks a return to the underground for Jake with his debut album "White Van Music" on indie heavyweight Rhymesayers Entertainment. Featuring artists ranging from Young Buck to MF Doom, the album is Jake's first opportunity to direct a project in its entirety.

One of the few who has worked with both superstar 50 Cent and underground hero MF Doom, Seattle-based producer Jake One spans the hip-hop spectrum. Born Jacob Dutton, he got his break while attending the University of Washington. After dropping off a tape of beats to his favorite record store, his productions landed in the hands of fellow producer Mr. Supreme. When Supreme began his Conception label, Jake was hired to produce Eclipse's "World Premier," a Pete Rock influenced cut that would land on J-Rocc's 1998 mix Walkman Rotation. A steady stream of work followed with 2003 being a monumental year with a track on DJ Babu's Duck Season, Vol. 2 and another on Beg for Mercy, the debut album from 50 Cent's G-Unit crew. His relationship with MF Doom would begin a year later via De La Soul and their track "Rock Co. Kane Flow." Work for everyone from Planet Asia to Lil Scrappy would follow, and then in 2007 he produced the high-profile track "All of Me" for 50 Cent and Mary J. Blige. In 2008 he helmed his own debut album, White Van Music, released by the Rhymesayers label. Alchemist, Busta Rhymes, Slug, and Young Buck were just some of the guest artists appearing on this diverse full-length.

Put "(remix)" behind The Game's "Where I'm From" 'cause that's what it's called.
