syria and iran form an alliance against a common enemy
« on: February 16, 2005, 04:50:36 PM »
IRAN and Syria announced a “common front” against the United States yesterday as Washington racheted up its pressure on two of the countries highest on its list of rogue states

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,251-1487733,00.html

have the americans bitten off more than they can chew?  the americans have already laid out the legal arguments for military action against syria with the syrian accountablity act of 2003.  every argument used against iraq was rehashed against syria, and the sec of state is reporting on potential syria-al qaeda ties every 6 months.

tough talk and suggestions of targetted bombings have been aimed at iran for some time.

it looks like syria and iran are tired of feeling like sitting ducks and are striking back.  well, strengthening their defenses atleast.

Syria cant do shit. Theyre useless, out dated and inefficient militarily. This is more bravado and tough talk than anything.
Syria and Iran have been close allies for almost 30 yrs, so this changes nothing.

not quite.  a syrian-persian alliance is no threat to the u.s.; but it restricts u.s. military options.  all the u.s. can do is bomb syria and iran.  it threatens the u.s. military presence in iraq.  if syria and iran redouble their support for terror groups that plays a significant role in destabalizing palestine, is a greater threat to israel, and to u.s. interests and bases throughout the region.

and the syrian forces, while poorly equipped, have been recognized as well disiplined and well trained.

What if Iranian scientist give or build Syria a nuclear bomb  :D guess who'd be crying then.

The Iranians are at least 3-4 years away from a nuclear weapon, and assuming they get it, theirs no way in the modern climate any type of nuclear transaction can be done.

A syrian/iranian military alliance is only useful if a two fold invasion of american troops in iraq occurs, and that aint happenin.

Im not sure what you mean by redoubling their terrorist efforts. Iran and Syria have been co ordinating terrorist activities for over 2 decades.

Basically this news changes nothing, its the same situation.

israel and the middle east would be crying...it won't effect the US much....but the fall out of such threats would more than likely lead to a war that neither syria or iran has any chance of winning

israel believes they are 6 months away.  i believe the cia has them pegged at about a year out.

i mean significantly increasing.

Basically this news changes nothing, its the same situation.

it's not quite the same situation.  it implies that u.s. aggression against either (targetted bombing of nuclear facilities in iran) could lead to direct arming and clashes with u.s. troops in iraq on two fronts.  the u.s. is building permanent military bases in iraq as well as in qatar and elsewhere in the region.  syria and iran can't defeat the u.s., but they can certainly weaken the u.s. presence in the region as a whole and in iraq in particular.

the u.s. military options in the region with regards to either syria or iran seem weakened by this move.

1. The year Ive constantly seen brandied about is 2008 , could be wrong tho
2. Syrian/Iranian "redoubling" of efforts means 5 Kutyashas crashing into a random northern Israeli forest,. instead of 3. Iranian/Syrian support of terrorism has no feasible military objective, its symbolic just in its existence
3. Again, youre assuming that a Syrian/Iranian joint attack on American troops in Iraq is being discussed. That aint happenin. Even if it did, the Syrians would get knocked the fuck out.

THIS NEWS CHANGES NOTHING.

well if Syria and Iran both attack american bases in Iraq , the americans can bomb Iran from Afghanistan and the gulf , as for syria there the weaker of the two but the Americans have bases in Turkey that they can use to bomb Syria + if push comes to shove Israel can jump in and invade Syria and take the opportunity to weaken the hizzbullah.

So yeah Syria and Iran surround american bases in Iraq but america surrounds them via Turkey , the gulf and Afghanistan.

"potential syria-al qaeda ties every 6 months."

I'm pretty sure that Bin Laden use to be in Syria before he went to Afghanistan.

turkey wouldn't let the americans use their bases to bomb iraq.  you think they'd let them use the bases against syria and iran?

i doubt that.

bin laden was in sudan before afghanistan, not syria.  the syrians are baathists like iraq was.  bin laden considers baathists socialist dogs.

even if theTurks says no to the americans that still leaves Syria open to bombing from israel  + it's not like Syria has a mighty army or anything like that so they won't be much trouble for the US even without the turkish bases and Israel.
Iran would last more but eventually they will lose too ,the problem *i guess* would be if the shiites in Iraq get involved against the americans and then the sunnis get involved against the shiites , then the civil war in Iraq between the shiites and the sunnis moves to Lebanon (where there is some tension after the assassination of hariri) then the christians and druze(anti-syrian mostly) declare war against the shiites (pro-syrian and pro-iran mostly).... but that's letting my imagination run wild right?

but it's the u.s. that has been talking shit.  the syrian accountability act of 2003, which bush referenced in his state of the union address and condi has also been referencing.  the u.s. has been flying recon missions over iran.  since the iraq invasion began the u.s. has been accusing syria of opening it's borders to terrorists and harboring saddam loyalists.  and it's american thinktanks and foreign policy analysts that have been advocating a bombing of iran.  this is a defensive move of iran and syria.

Sorry to say that but if nothing else is possible America would just nuke them. No way they accept another embarrassment like the bloody loss in Vietnam.
The issue is this.. the Middle-East can never severly attack America. There can never be soldiers from Syria holding it down in New York and shit. Never. All they can do is defend themselves successfully on their own ground. And I don't think that this is likely, because the US has bombs. Lots of them.
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

Imagine soldiers from Syria trying to invade neighborhoods like Brooklyn. They'd get shot through the head before you know it
