Bush to cut education programs for intercity students
« on: February 24, 2005, 10:44:33 PM »
I got this in my e-mail from my old college. This is from the school president.

Dear St. Olaf Community,

I am writing to inform you of some distressing federal budgetary news.  On
Monday February 7th, President Bush released his 2006 budget and in it he
has recommended the elimination of the federal TRiO Upward Bound, TRiO
Educational Talent Search, and GEAR UP programs.  These programs provide
college preparatory services to low-income students whose parents do not
have baccalaureate degrees.  Nationally, there are more than 3,000 TRiO
and GEAR UP programs that serve over 2 million students.  In Minnesota,
TRiO and GEAR UP serve over 20,000 students.

As you know, for the past 15 years St. Olaf has been a private college
leader in postsecondary outreach efforts to low-income communities through
the Upward Bound, Talent Search and GEAR UP programs.  The track records
of the St. Olaf programs are exemplary.  They undergo rigorous annual
evaluations and provide much needed services for students who are
frequently bypassed by the educational system.  Alumni Ivan Carter (’97),
a participant in and staff member for St. Olaf’s TRiO programs, was
recently profiled in the December issue of the St. Olaf Alumni Magazine
(see link below).  While the nationwide rate for college participation of
low-income high school graduates is 30%, the college-sending rates of the
St. Olaf programs range from 80-95%.  While at the national level,
low-income students have college graduation rates of 5% or less, the St.
Olaf programs’ college completion/retention rates average 50-70%.

The defunding of the TRiO and GEAR UP programs would be a terrible loss
for the St. Olaf community.  Not only do more than 300 St. Olaf students
and alumni volunteer for, tutor in, and mentor for the TRiO/GEAR UP
programs, the programs address the mission of the college, helping
students become “responsible and knowledgeable citizens of the world.”

I encourage you to contact your state representative and senators and urge
them to fight the cuts to the TRiO Educational Talent Search, TRiO Upward
Bound, and GEAR UP programs.  Attached, you will find sample letters you
can use to write to your elected officials and a document listing
Minnesota legislators who have St. Olaf programs in their districts.
Questions about the budget cuts can be directed to the TRiO/GEAR UP
directors: Heather Campbell (Upward Bound), Julia Seper (GEAR UP), Janis
Johnson (Educational Talent Search), or Mark Schelske (Chair, Education
Department).

Fewer poor people making it to college.... I wonder if that would result in more of them joining the military...

I am glad that President Bush cut these programs. They need to start cutting more government programs. We have a gigantic budget deficit and something has to go.

cutting education services is a BAD thing . Getting everyone educated should be the white house's biggest priority. cut aid going out to other nations but don't cut education

Maybe they could stop invading other countries for pseudo-reasons?

I think a country should never cut on education. Education is the most important thing for a country to spend its money on after security and medical care.
