ok, your entitled to your opinion but i just dont see why people are acting so shocked by this and acting like Jay-Z is the first artist to take lyrics from someone else and use them in his songs...

ive got a question then...shouldnt every producer who samples be criticised and called a biter? they are taking other peoples work and calling it their own after all...

the art of producing is different the art of rapping. And no, it isnt using another persons line or even lines thats such a big deal...but give credit where its due. Ive used others lines...but ive done it in a way where its OBVIOUS where it came from as soon as u hear it, and its done more as a respect thing.

As far as the "Foxy" thing, she does get dissed. Jay Z gets it worse....only cus so many out there (in NY) consider him some sorta rap god. I never really felt him. Foxy is just a joke, so who cares lol. Her shits all ghostwritten anyways, and that shit is ten times worse.

Well, I'll stick up for him.  A lot of this is intentional.  He doesnt' think yall are idiots, he knows you've heard every BIG song, so he either uses the same verse, or a portion of it to cast back to Biggie.  Jay Z is easily talented enough to write his own rhymes, which he's proven on dozens and dozens of dope songs, every once in a while he says someone elses rhyme as a way to give props.

Snoop did the same thing with Quik on Pimp Slapp'd, that song was just for people out west, because it's about Suge, and he named off all those gang members and shit, everybody he was talking to knew that Quik wrote that verse.

The guy covered "Lodi Dodi" on his first CD, he likes doing his favorite verses from other people.  Like Jay Z, he's easily proven he can write his own material without biting lines, he just bites lines to bring attention in people's mind to the original artist.

ABSOLUTELY.

Thank fuck someone else on the board is bright enough to realise this.

What Jay-Z does isn't 'biting'. He would have no problem saying those lines are Biggie's - he's quoting them, not trying to pass them off as his own.

It's just the same as Pac on 'My Mind's Made Up', when he says Two years ago / A friend of mine... - anyone with even a slight knowledge of hip-hop should realise that's not his lyric, but he's adapting a classic line for a new generation, not ripping it off.

A proper example of biting is Master P ripping off other rappers' flows when they're fashionable (Pac's and Scarface's in particular)

Well, I got mixed feelings on it.

One thing y'all might not realize unless you hear "i'm not a biter I'm a writer" is that he doesn't just jack Biggie rhymes or rhymes from songs that everybody's heard...he bites a grip of lyrics that are from songs that most of us who are 21 and younger have never ever heard before. He has bit 2-4 bars from a lotta songs that old school heads are probably familliar with, but that's it. Snoop, and many other rappers do take lines from songs, but it's usually from songs that everybody knows and that were radio hits.

I donno, it annoys me a lot but I wouldn't say it makes him wack. I just get annoyed when people always use that "everybody does that" because not only does he do it much much more than most rappers, and not only does he take lines we've never heard, but he claims to be the #1 rapper and all that. And it's nothin worst than when you hear somebody say somethin like "damn Jay-Z is real, you heard when he said _______" and you are like um.......he actually got that from ______ and they are like "no he didn't, he said it first!" you know.

That's bullshit.  He 'bites' old rhymes by people you've never even heard, because to people who HAVE heard, it's a cast back to that old style.

Do yall honestly think he isn't skilled enough to write his own shit? Are you crazy? This guy is easy one of the best writers around.

You hear a rhyme, then later find out he didn't write it, and get mad about it?  It's YOU that's the problem, heads know he didn't write that, and when they hear it, they go "Oh, shit, I forgot about that Grandmaster Flash track, or Man, that's Big Daddy Kane!".

What it comes down to is, the guy has CONSISTANT wrote dope song after dope song without 'biting'.  I think it's obvious to anybody with half a mind that when he borrows somebody's lines, he's doing it to say "Hey, i like this, this was dope shit when Kurt Blow said it back then".

Snoop doing it on Pimp Slapp'd WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE FUCKING SONG.  Everybody he named on the song were people nobody'd know except people in the street in L.A., and everyone of them would know that's Quik's verse, and would say "Damn, Snoop fucked Suge up with Quik's verse from 'Tonight'"...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem here is yall don't know your shit!  Jay Z and Snoop ain't trying to slide one by, they're both excellent writers, you think they'd cop out and just jack shit, knowing full well anybody could hear the original track?  The problem is, YOU just haven't heard the original track, and man... THEY HAVE.  To them, everybody's heard Quik's verse on "Tonight", so of course everybody's gonna immediately catch on that that's Quik's writing, that's the whole point!

Dog they could get SUED for doing shit like that... and why would they do it, when they could just write it themselves? THEY CAN WRITE! It'd be one thing if Dr. Dre or somebody who doesn't write much was doing it, then maybe you could say "oh shit"... but Snoop and Jay can both write their own, and have written their own not once, or not twice, but DOZENS of times and came off with a hit.

It's pretty amazing to me that anybody wouldn't see they're complimenting the original writers.

thats why i wasnt sure if Snoop was just givin props to Quik on that song. If you listen to the song, he keeps mentionin how it aint about "crip or blood". Suge's from Campanella Park (supposedly), and so was Mausberg from Quiks crew. So when he made that line saying "its friday morning, the phone is ringin off the deck/ and its some homies talkin bout i disrespected they set/" the first thing i thought was maybe it was Quik who hit him up, and he used Quiks verse to show respect. But thats just a guess...
