Rappers 1st albums - What the fuck
« on: July 24, 2002, 06:41:22 PM »
I strongly dislike that when rappers put out albums, it can not by any means be done better than his first one, according to lots of fans.
It seems like the 1st album becomes a instant classic, as long as there are beats on it, and the lyrics is pretty aight.
ESPECIALLY socalled underground-headz has a tendency to dislike albums once they sell more than wood in the hood.
It's the two-edged blade as they say.
Good examples:

Eminem - People say Infinite is among his best work, but the beats is average, and it shows off a immature Eminem.
Because it's his "foot in the door" people talk about this as "classic shit"

Xzibit - His 2 first LP's was dope as fuck, maybe near classic, but when he started selling with Restless, many people switched like the tricks they are.
Restless was a dope album, even if there was some odd joints, but there sure was odd joints on "At the" & "40 dayz"

Dr.Dre - People say the Chronic is classic, and yes it is, but no matter what Dre releases now, it cannot surpass the first album in most fans view.
Therefore he doesn't release that much any more, because he knows it must be of VERY high standard.

If 2001 came out back then, and Tha Chronic was released in 1999, I bet you $1000 that people would call 2001 classic, and not the Chronic.

There's a bunch of other examples too, but I'm tired.

First albums are usually better not because they are merely first albums, but because the artists are HUNGRY, and aren't hollywood yet.  When Dre made the original CHronic, he was broke as fuck and had a bucnh of other Mc';s that wanted to become famous and rich.  End result-- a real classic front to back.  2001 was dope too, but too much filler on the second half means it is not nearly as dope.

Illmatic, Dogg Food, Ready to Die, Soul on Ice, Doggystyle, etc etc, are probably the best examples of first albums that are WAY better than anything else put out by these artists.

Plus, first albums mean the artists are usually new to the masses and there is an element of surprise for the listener....you don't really know what to expect.  I mean, Wu Tang is still making dope albums but by now what else different can they do?  Nothing will ever compare to 36 Chambers, and that is the way it is?  Jome, you like CNN, right?  Well, their first album kills their second and Noreaga's first one kills his other shit........

Of course, their are exceptions to this rule...some just get better  (Tupac, Scarface) or keep putting out music nearly as good (Nas, Jay Z) while others simply set the bar too high (Snoop, Ras Kass)....

I think Doggystyle is a perfect example, people expect way too much from Snoop, they want him to spit like 10 years ago, tats impossible and stupid. like Sikotic said, appreciate what you get.

and even The CHronic had fillers imo

i think both dre 2001 and the chronic are both classics no matter what anyone says. Dre is the only person that i can think off the top of my head that one of his albums was just as good as his first album.

This is a good topic!
I don't see the point in always saying that the first album released is the classic and the best!
As Jome mentions Eminem's first release "Infinitive" - Surely it's a good album but in my opinion nothing compared to his last three!!
Chronic is of course a classic but 2001 is one of the best albums released in years!
As long as the artists put somethin' tight out for us we shouldn't talk so much and instead listen to the music and enjoy it!!

Not all rappers have classic or better debut's than their later work, but that does happen in ALOT of cases because they are hungrier as MC's and they want to impress so they push themselves in the beginning, but then with some MC's they slack off once they've made that impression. There's only a few artists in hip-hop that are truely consistent, i'm not talking about classic after classic, I mean straight great album after great album.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

There's a point here...

It's true that people say that debutalbums is the best, but like you said, it ain't true.

The examples you've brought up is perfect examples.

So let's just consider every album as a debutalbum and judge it ourselves.

I dont think Chronic would be a classic album if it was brought out now because the sound in rap music has changed.  If you listen to a NEW song and listen to an OLD song you can tell which is which because there is more sound, more beats more instrments and better quality.  I think it will be the same in 10 years time, people will look back at the last meal and dre2001 and think wow its a CLASSIC album, because when they look in there cd collection there will be hot new cd's that they have got where the sound and quality is breath taking.

Thats just my point of view n e ways.

yea, but who created that sound in the first place?
and who created the sound that dominates hiphop now?
D-R-E is the answer
so if 2001 came out in 94, and Chronic came out in 99, the sounds would be switched backwards, and the old G-Funk would be in now.

yea, even if Snoop had Dre & God doing all his beats, people would still prefer Doggystyle.

a reason why albums in 92- 95 were better might be that they are lackin in ideas and creativity. i mean its probably hard for rappers to come up with some new shit that people havent heard before. They try create a new sound, cause there's so many different stuff out that sounds the same. You see dre came up with that 2001 sound, that was new and on another level, but now he's usin it all the time, so I just hope he uses somtin for his next album that we havent heard before.
