Does West Coast production need more diversity?
« on: June 17, 2002, 07:54:04 PM »
"Mainstream" West Coast hip hop recently has been sounding quite similar as of late due to the hiring of the usual suspects of producers: Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Daz, Warren G, BATTLECAT, Fredwreck, Jelly Roll, Meech Wells, etc. which is cool but I would like to hear some new sounds and a little bit more diversity.

It bothers me that talented producers like DJ Pooh, Bud'da, QDIII, Johnny J, etc. are overlooked when they have produced countless of classic songs and worked on classic albums in the past. I'm glad to see E-A Ski back in the game and hope he produces for other West Coast rappers. Does anyone know what happen to Sam Sneed, I know he had cancer but it was cured, and J. Flexx? They produced classic tracks too.

What do y'all feel about the current situation of the production on the West Coast? I'm speaking for mainstream because I know there's a lot of ill underground producers.

I think with the release of Man vs. Machine, and Detox, we will all be hearing some new sounds.

the key here is NEW talent.  Ski, QDIII, Johnny J, DJ Pooh, etc. have all been around for a while and are tight.  Let some new producers in, who haven't been brought out by Snoop or Dre to show their stuff

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

if u go to the bay u get different beats...cuz theres so many producers....they got that mob shit, that heavy bass shit or they can come with midwest beats, hell a bay rapper can rip a south beat too....sac town got that dark shit but everyone up their has their own twist...but down in l.a. everyone uses the usual....like wcv nobody uses pooh, buddah, qd III and others like that....its a matter of wanting to sell records with big names....if u said u had an album produced by budda then u said u had an album produced by quik...the people automatically go for quik since hes the big name...id like to hear other people produce....like big hollis is finally getting his recognition...id like to see lynch produce for some l.a. artists....id love to see julio g produce for more people....

I'd like to see the westcoast move in this direction:

Jelly Roll
Scott Storch
Fredwreck
High Tec
E A Ski
Quik
Meechie Wells

were all the producers I've enjoyed recently, and think they're bringing something NEW to the table.  I like the Squeaky Funk the best that Meech, Storch, and Jelly Roll are doing... that's some dope stuff, imo.

Ski, Fredwreck, and Quik are more into the deep beats, more grimy, less funky.

We don't even hear much from some tight west coast producers now

DJ Uneek
Rhythm D (made tight ass beats for ruthless)
Dr. Jam (not well known, but did a lot of ruthless shit)

Word! I was just thinking about how dope Ruthless's in-house production team was. Those three produced a lot of classic tracks for Eazy and Bone. So many amazing West Coast producers gettin' slept on these days. I wish a rapper would go against the grain and use them but we all know that will never happen.

I never, EVER, felt Eazy's production, unless it was a Dre track.  The stuff on his 187um killa album I thought was real shallowly produced, it was kindergarten compared to dre's Godzilla Chronic production, in my opinion.

I disagree.  I think that producion TOTALLY matched Eazy's style.  In fact, I think E sounded better with Rhythm D and Dr. Jam, IMO.
