Dr Dre is the world's richest rapper at 18:28 GMT by Denz
Dr Dre has been named as the highest earning urban star of last year. The West Coast rapper/producer took the No 2 position on the Rolling Stone's list of the 50 highest earning artists of 2001. Stadium rockers U2 took the No 1 spot.

Rolling Stone revealed that Dre earned a hefty $1 million per week in 2001. The studio wizard has his own recording career as well as producing for the likes of Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige. Sales of Mary's Family Affair single netted Dre around $2m of his annual $52m income.

Rapper and entrepreneur Master P also had a good year. Despite earlier reports of bankruptcy, the Southern rap mogul earned $36m in 2001 from his No Limit Records enterprise and took the No 6 spot on the list.

The 2001 Rich List Top 10 looks like this:

1. U2 - $61.9m
2. Dr Dre - $51.9m
3. The Beatles - $47.9m
4. The Dave Matthews Band - $43.4m
5. Madonna - $40.8m
6. Master P - $36m
7. Carlos Santana - $32.7m
8. 'N Sync - $26.5m
9. Aerosmith - $24.2m
10. Sting - $24m

Further down the list was Eminem, who appeared at No 19 ($19.4 million), Jay-Z at No 46 ($9.3 million) and Nelly at No 49 ($8.2 million).

It's weird how Dre makes so much money but doesn't show it (pretty much) at all. All I can think of him showing his wealth was the Up In Smoke tour stage, but that was only for the people to have a good time. None of that Cash Money "Bling Bling Bentley I got platinum & diamonds all over my body and teeth, drinking Cristal from a crystal glass and living in a diamond house" -shit.

The really amazing thing is that Aftermath didn't release anything in 2001 except The Wash (which flopped) and the D-12 record (which I assume Dre got some money for, since Shady Records is a sub-label). So Dre was making a million bucks a week primarily producing singles. And I agree, it's cool that he doesn't flash his money around like some other rappers, whom I assume don't make nearly as much money as Dre. The only thing he does show off are his phat ass cars in them videos, but it's all good.
