it's man made but not on purpose. some dumb french scientist was working on a cure for another disease and found a section of monkey dna that had a natural immunity to the disease. when infused with african villagers who the cure was being tested on, it started killing them off (this is what you get when you mix dna) and soon it started to spread. nothing evil about it, just a really really really big fuck up
