How does every1 feel about da current state of rap
« on: March 02, 2002, 05:07:12 PM »
Am i tha only 1 or does any1 else think rap has just turned completely stale.  Look at tha 92-96 era,  it seems like every albume that dropped was a classic.  Up untill 97,  every rap era made some sought of positive movement or change for tha better.  Since 97,  rap has had very little positive in my opinion since than, atleast in my opinion.  It jus seems like everything that comes outta rap now a days is wack,  every album has similar content with tha exception of a few gems.  All tha greats from back in day are shadows of there former selves,  like snoop,  mobb deep,  dpg,  wu tang ice cube.  every1 is in tha game just to sell records now a days.  I listen to all older albums than newer stuff,  a lot more.  Does any1 else feel rap now a days is stale

That's what I've been thinking for so long. Hip Hop now is straight up boring and predictable with a few exceptions. There are some classics that drop here and there but it wasn't like it was before. The West for example dropped a classic every single year from '88-'96. I loved Hip Hop back then to the fullest. The only Hip Hop I buy is early 90's East Coast classics since I own all the West Coast and Dirty South classics. I just recently copped The Infamous and Reasonable Doubt. I've heard them before but never bought them. Tight albums by the way.

not really b/c sales r down for most rappers wit tha exception of few.  Maybe its tha overpopulated market of the popularity of downloading but sales r down.  How many of us would of ever thought daz would be lucky to sell 100,000 copies.  Look at it,  a lot of rappers that dropped these classic between 92-96 lose there tru fans everyday b/c they r tired of tha bull shit they put out

Damn Tom, you hit it right on the nail. I have been thinking about this for a long ass time too >:(

Back in that era 90-96 and a little of 97 many dope ass albums dropped. Albums that still get play from me. Back then  did not have to skip songs on an album cause the whole thing was classic. In fact go back and count how many classic and dope albums dropped during that era in rap. You would need more than 10 fingers fo sho!!!!!
Look at all the classics that dropped

Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Dogg Pound - Dogg Food
Snoop - Doggystyle
Warren G - G Funk Era
2pac- Me Against the World
2pac - All Eyez on Me
Nas - Illmatic
and many more

Now since that era there have been very few albums that have been mentioned as classic. Its not that the rappers fucked up rap, its really the $$$$. Money is the root of all evil and it is destroying the quality of rap. Look at those albums I mentioned. You could just pop them into your cd player and let it play all the way without skipping one fucking song.
Now in days you can't do that no more. Sure rappers put like 20 songs on their cd but only 1/4 of them are tight and the content is all the same. I find myself buying more albums from that 92-96 era than recent albums. Westcoast music was at its best. Most rappers now just rap for money. Shit it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Damn I wanna go on and on about this but I just wanna say :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  I miss the good old days

rap is def in the midst of some sort of a revolution.......yeah rap's mc's 5 years back and more were so much tighter and had so much more to say wit so much meanin, but dont get shit's bout to change.......first of all theres gonna need to b younger cats that got to step up the conciensness of rap......and another thing is the individual who responsible of bringin rap to a completely nutha level, rakim will b comin out wit his new album while dre of course is producin.....and yo i know its one album but on da real look fo that to change the face of hip-hop......thats why im so hype bout this album, its the best lyricist ever to bless the mic while we have the best producer overseein the album.....also im hype bout the new gangstar album.....xhibit's new album i heard should b prolly a great lyrical album not to mention lots of nice beatmakers, the new em album should b completely diff then what everyone has heard from, common, and basically my fav group "the roots" r comin out with a album this year.......so 2002 and 2003 will b basically b a breathe of fresh air.......a renacance
holla back ya'll
peace

i feel that hip hop as a whole as gone downhill.  all the really want is tha money and dont care bout the quality of an ablum.  then they wonder why tha fuck their shit dont sell.  recently there has been a lot of disapointments from tha hip hop world.  ive also started to listen to other shit more now cuz tha hip hop world has driven me there will all its flops.

I partly agree... but there's still only hip-hop for me.

Its all about money right now, there's hardly any hungry rappers/MC's out there these days, everyone just seems to be in it for the money as hip-hop has become EXTREMELY commercial in terms of success in the recent years & thats where the money lies. I don't blame anyone for getting caught up with money & materialistic things, it's easy to when you've never hardly experienced it in your lifetime, but if the subject matters don't progress and young cats that are coming up stick to the winning formula that is 'bling, bling' right now then I don't see much of a change for a LONG time. I'm just glad that I have my old classic collection to go back to.
