What makes someone love something that is bad for them?

Allah tells us in the Qu'ran that we can love a thing that's bad for us, and hate a thing that's good for us.  What's interesting here is that the English translation of the word Allah used is "love".  So we are not talking about lust here.  We are talking about sincere love for something that is bad for us.

I have my own ideas, but let's start a discussion.  Here's the question.

What makes somebody love something that is bad for them?  Or dislike something that is good for them?

i wouldnt go as far as to say everything is so love and hate. we reject things that may be good for us because they are unfamiliar. its like when a teen first starts getting his sexual urges but its hard to get a girl at first. he gets nervous while talking, unsure what to say, and avoids the situation all together not because he hates girls, its just that his current paradigm doesnt include an awareness of how females think. people that hate things that are good for them have either not awakened to the benfits of said object or they are just ignorant assholes; or they see too many cons and cant get around them. as for loving things that hurt us, hey if we get used to being around those things for whatever reason or they are constantly occupying our mind, we will be addicted to them. drugs, relationships, entertainment, all this shit can be poisonous but since we are so consumed by it its hard not to have a few faults.

Nice response.

That's pretty much how I feel about loving things that are bad for us.  If we are in an environment or if we develop a lifestyle in which harmful things surround us, it would be easier to go after that thing even though it may cause us harm.  So the trick is in changing your lifestyle and environment to prevent that from happening.

I couldn't agree more.
