Rick Ross: Center Of Miami Heat
— by Charles "CZA" Sweet II

Miami is known for the sun, the beaches and the parties. Many flock down here for those three things, unaware of how life is for those who don't have a trust fund. Rick Ross is one of those who know what the streets are -- the grit, grime and tarnished edges hidden from the tourists. He is the voice for the impoverished and those who stay in the trap because that's all they know.

With his debut album Port Of Miami coming soon, BallerStatus spoke with Rick to get an understanding of what's up with him, the streets, the new deal with Def Jam and his personal feelings on the game. It's hot down there; read why.

Ballerstatus.net: You've been on the scene for a while now, but you haven't had the exposure like you do now. For those who haven't heard the name "Rick Ross," introduce the world to who and what you are.

Rick Ross: I'm an underground cat that's been in the game for a decade now, reppin' the 305, Miami to the fullest. I'm with Slip-N-Slide, and I was part of that deal with Def Jam. We're doing it real big right now. We're holding it down, for sure.

Ballerstatus.net: Miami is known for the 808-influenced booty music from artists like Luke, 69 Boyz, etc. How would you describe your style? Is it similar to that?

Rick Ross: Nah, not really. This is the more gritty side of Miami -- the underbelly. This music represents the REAL streets of the M-I-A, where it really goes down. My music represents the hustlers in the struggle.

BallerStatus.net: No doubt. What's the name of your album and who are you featuring?

Rick Ross: The name's Port Of Miami and I got Jay-Z, Brisco, Trick Daddy, plus my boys, Carroll City Cartel. The album is going to be hot, for real.

BallerStatus.net: Your single, "Hustlin'," is absolutely fishscale, homie. I'm really feeling that one line about you knowing the REAL Noreaga. You really know dude?

Rick Ross: Yeah. What happened was one of my boys was in lock-up and his cell was a like four down from Noreaga. I'd call my homeboy and ask him like, "What he doing?" One time Noreaga heard some of my stuff on the radio and he really dug it, so we was cool ever since. That's my dog.

BallerStatus.net: What's your take on the current state of rap? How do you feel about it?

Rick Ross: I'm loving it. Right now, the south is blowing up, for real. Houston got it locked. ATL got it locked. I'm stepping up and making that same kind of noise for the M-I-A. Music in general always moves, always evolves, and that's just what's happening right now. Everything's evolving.

BallerStatus.net: Who are some of your inspirations as far as how you're coming out?

Rick Ross: Man, there are just too many to name. Big Ballers did they thing for real, when they came out. Nobody had come like they did before, with a movie and soundtrack like that. Scarface, UGK; just way too many for me to sit here and name off.

BallerStatus.net: What do you think of coastal bias? Do you think cats from different coasts should get together?

Rick Ross: I think that -- to get really good music -- you have to come outside of your zone, your comfort area. I like it when dudes jump on tracks with people from somewhere totally different. It makes it more interesting to feel their chemistry, you know? I'm all for it.

BallerStatus.net: If you could sum up what Port Of Miami is in one word, what would it be?

Rick Ross: Classic. This is classic material right here. The same vein as a Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die, or All Eyez On Me. Classic.

BallerStatus.net: I feel you on that one. You gotta have that mindset. Who's doing the production?

Rick Ross: I got Kanye, Mr. Collipark, and I'm sitting down with Just Blaze to name a few. I'm getting the best for this album here, top notch all the way around.

BallerStatus.net: What's something that most people don't know about Rick Ross?

Rick Ross: I'm real. I'm a laid back dude that's about my business. I only f--- with real n----s. I go to NY and I f---s with real n----s. I go to Cali and I f---s with real n----s. If you fake, please escort yourself to the backroom and kill yourself. The game don't need you. For real.
