Atletico Madrid to appoint Aguirre as Coach
« on: May 23, 2006, 01:15:14 PM »
MADRID, May 23 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid have confirmed that former Osasuna boss Javier Aguirre will replace Pepe Murcia as first team coach next season.

The club issued a statement saying the 48-year-old Mexican will be presented to the media on Wednesday.

Aguirre has coached Osasuna for the last three seasons, taking them to the final of the King's Cup in 2005 and a record-equalling fourth-place finish in the Primera Liga in the recently completed season.

The former Mexico coach has been praised for his skilful management of limited resources and his ability to motivate players.

Atletico finished in a disappointing 10th position in the Primera Liga, two points behind modest city neighbours Getafe.

President Enrique Cerezo said Aguirre's appointment was part of a major reorganisation in the club's sporting administration which included the departure of director of football Toni Munoz last week.

What do you guys think of Aguirre?  Osasuna was close to descend from the Liga Española when he came in, and they became a top 6 club in a few years.

Would have thought he would have at least attempted one season in the Champions League with Osasuna, although I suppose in the long term he has more chance of being consistantly successful at Atletico.
