Bishop slams UK over Middle East
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has joined calls for the UK to press for a ceasefire in the Middle East.
"We really have to ask whether some Western governments are catching up with the consciences of their own people", he told BBC Radio 4.
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has so far refused to condemn Israel's response to rocket attacks from militants in Lebanon.
But Archbishop Williams said the UK and US must change their stance.

Correct me if im wrong Don but I have not read one single scathing attack on what Israel is doing, in fact the two scathing articles I have read from Haaretz and from the LA Times. There is a complete reluctance to speak out by anyone over here, its all very sanitised.

they were pushing home the "israel is using a disproportionate amount of force" messages on the BBC dinner time news last night.. so israel IS being portrayed as being overly agressive in the main stream UK media.. i don't normally watch the BBC/ITV dinner time offerings.. but after the stuff thats being posted about isreali bias here i was curious..
Don Rizzle:
i think tony blair and the press have been dragging their feet on this issue, like virtuoso said he has not seen any scathing attack on israel, everyone is tip toeing around the subject, words like disproportionate use of force is a very mild way of explaining israels response....
I TO DA GEEZY:
--- Quote from: King Tech- Triangle of Death on July 20, 2006, 11:39:23 AM ---the Palestinians have a right under international law to use violence.... Israel, meanwhile, is employing violence on a daily basis against the general population of Gaza, harming civilians and militants alike, even though under international law it has a responsibility to look after the occupied population no different from its duties towards its own citizens.
--- End quote ---
I have to state the obvious. This is a very well-written piece. I could spend hours in rhetorical analysis of the statements made, pointing out their fragility. However, I chose not to bore you with one of my college majors and decided to quote the above instead. This statement reflects in the clearest way the attitude of the writer toward the conflict. One thing I need to remind you: Palestinian Kassam missiles as well as suicide bombings are both "violence against general population". Although it is expected from the reader to conclude Palestinian violence is legitimate under occupation
(and as you know Hamas including all of its politicians views the mere existence of Israel as an occupation), while Israeli violence (In protection of its citizens- Jews, Muslims, Christians etc) is illegitimate.
