It seems almost crazy that there hasn’t been one significant lyricist of Mexican descent to emerge from Los Angeles. Sure there was Kid Frost, and even Cypress Hill’s B Real (Sen Dog is Cuban) and a couple groups in the 90’s. But frankly, none of them could really spit. Enter Omar Cruz, who is signed to B.Y.I. Entertainment, a company that recently secured a fifty-fifty venture with Geffen/Interscope. The up-and-coming MC hopes to do for Mexicans in L.A. what Big Pun did for Puerto Ricans in New York City.

“Los Angeles is basically a Mexican city,” says the 26 year old son of Colombian and Mexican immigrants. “But we’ve never gotten included in representations of the city. Like on The Chronic, which was such an influential album as far as showing the world L.A. It’s time for a change.”

Cruz has ben busy trying to bring his community into the mainstream. After dropping his debut mixtape, City of Gods, in ’05,he started fielding calls from both Jimmy Iovine’s and Dr. Dre’s camps. “I was never gonna sign to Aftermath, that was just a rumor,” says the rapper,on whose project Joker Brand OGs Mr. Cartoon and Estevan Oriol are consulting. “The reason thar we got the label deal [with Geffen] is because B.Y.I. is a movement. It wasn’t just me, we had a street team, artwork, marketing, everything.”

Omar recently released The Cruzifixion, a mixtape hosted by DJ Skee, which features all new songs, the majority of which are produced by B.Y.I.’s in-house squad. “I want to bring a new sound,” he says. “So we’re trying to incorporate the sound of the records that our parents used to listen to, salsa and meringue, but make it still hard West Coast hip-hop.”

It’s this musical mix, coupled with Cruz’s rigid multisyllabic rhymes, that makes him such a promising prospect. “There’s so much going on with Mexicans right now with the issues of immigration,” he says. “I’m not a political rapper, but you can’t be Mexican without touching on these things. I want to be the voice for my people.” ---Noah Callahan-Bever XXL

Really? I felt that way after the first listen but it really grew on me. After that I listened to it everyday for like a month.

Props on the heads up. What issue is this on?

Thanks for the heads-up. It's been a while since I last bought a XXL issue because of their G-Unit dickriding, but I'll cop this issue though...

^^^^Yeah, I think you should give it some more spins. Actually, the first couple of times I listened to The Cruzifixion, I only liked a handful of tracks. But after about 7 spins I liked it more & more. It's a kind of mixtape that has to grow on you...at least that's my opinion.
