Rhymes Gets New Charge for Christmas
« on: December 12, 2006, 06:01:36 AM »
Apparently, he's been naughty.

Busta Rhymes is facing a new weapon count to go along with an assault charge stemming from the alleged August smackdown of a fan who spat on the "Gimme Some More" MC's ride.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office said prosecutors filed a new complaint today in Manhattan Criminal Court, tacking on criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor carrying up to a year in jail, for a machete found in Rhymes' SUV.

An early Christmas gift it wasn't.

The 34-year-old hip-hopster, called before the judge by his real name, Trevor Smith, was present for the hearing but remained mum as attorneys for both sides filed motions. Afterward, he exited the courtroom without speaking to reporters.

The D.A. is already pursuing third-degree misdemeanor assault and harassment charges for the Aug. 12 incident.

Rhymes was collared a week afterward and accused of repeatedly punching and kicking Roberto Lebron as the entertainer's bodyguards stood by and watched. The victim was treated at a hospital for a concussion, split lip and wrist injury.

The rapper was initially booked on felony assault and harassment charges, along with the weapons-possession charge after police searched the vehicle Rhymes was riding in and found the 10-inch blade in a rear seat pocket.

This is the second attempt by prosecutors to add to the Brooklyn-born performer's rap sheet by including the machete count. Criminal Court judge Shawndya Simpson nixed their earlier petition at a hearing in October.

Rhymes' attorney, Scott Leemon, was unavailable for comment. But he told E! Online in August that the blade was simply a "prop" and, at worst, an "administrative violation"—not a criminal charge.

The lawyer also accused authorities of targeting Rhymes because of his reputed silence in a separate investigation into the unsolved murder of his 29-year-old bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, outside a Brooklyn warehouse during a video shoot back in February.

Rhymes was also pulled over early last month for allegedly talking on his cell phone—which is illegal in New York. He was issued a summons for a moving violation and released.

Rhymes' next court date in the assault case is scheduled for Feb. 20.

The law is truly fucked up if you can't talk on your cell driving in New York. That guy deserved to get beat for spitting on his ride too.

It seems like rappers are being singled out nowadays. He should be more careful but still, it looks like law enforcement is looking for any reasons to take it to rappers. Rappers need to be more careful.
Being a LAKER is a privilige. Unfortunately some "Lakers" have forgotten that.
