To be really honest? 2006 kinda sucked for me. Thank God I've been digging deep into the crates of musical history to keep me satisfied. This year's hip-hop has barely been noteworthy at all to me; just a few albums deserve a mention here:

The Roots - Game Theory
Kinda weird musically, and at first I didn't really like it a lot, but it grew on me rapidly. Album of the year to me.

Dr. Octagon - The Return of Dr. Octagon
...a really odd mixture of electronic sounds with hip-hop.

Jay Dee - Donuts
A beat tape, but so damn enjoyable it's unheard of.

Ghostface - Fishscale
Smooooooooth on the rhymes and beats. I liked it.

Army of the Pharaos - The Torture Papers
Emceeing is alive! A large pack of rappers: a great bunch of talented ones, although there's clearly some less talented ones also part of the group... A satisfying result overall, and unfortunately this project was majorly overlooked...

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead
Funny how Nas managed to stir up a hype simply by the name of his album. The content is rather consistent: there's very few standout tracks, while at the same time there's no weak spots on the album. The question remains: why the hell is Snoop on this album? Funny to note on the other hand how Game and Nas make a very good combination for verse trading, and how about Chrisette Michele's soulful hook on "Can't Forget About You"? I'm definately looking to hear more from her. HHID has some good verses by Nas, but it's never outstanding. That's typical for the state of rap music if you ask me.

M-1 - Confidential
Kinda weird because M-1 took the spice out of the album to make it easier to digest for the masses... Yet what remains are some spiritually uplifting rhymes, mostly spit on smooth beats. Could have been so much more; ended up as "simply a nice album".

And then there's the vast majority of the albums that could be listened to without having to force yourself to skip to the next track... K-OS, Jay-Z, J Dilla's "The Shining", AZ, Hi-Tek, Busta Rhymes, Murs, OutKast, The Game... All could have been so much more. I have yet to listen to the new BCC and JMT albums. I'll be attending their concerts in 2007, so I hope they bring some heat...

All in all, there's only one conclusion for me to pull out of all this. The album of the year 2006 to me isn't a hip-hop album. Koop's nu-jazz effort "Koop Islands" (with an extremely gay album cover) easily takes the title, with its touching rhythms and spiritual lyrics.

So Detox is coming in 2007.

.

Well, as for '06, I haven't been listening to a lot of hiphop, but I liked most albums that I bought this year. But that's stuff like Arctic Monkeys and Thom Yorke which doesn't really fit this topic...

my fav HipHop album of 2006 tho (of the few I've heard): Game Theory

One word: Aftermath

Means it might drop around March 2008 if we're lucky.
