lalo and Collison Honored By NABC
Bruin duo named first-team All-District 15

Feb. 28, 2007

UCLA basketball standouts Arron Afflalo and Darren Collison have been selected first-team All-District 15 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), it was announced today.

Afflalo, a junior guard, is the leading candidate for Pac-10 Player of the Year honors. A lockdown defender, he is the Bruins' leading scorer (17.5 average) and has led the team in scoring in eight of the last 11 games. He is also second in the Pac-10 in three-point field goals per game. Collison, a sophomore, is in his first season as the Bruins' starting point guard. He ranks first in the Pac-10 in steals and second in assists while averaging 12.9 points.

ESPN's Andy Katz has called Afflalo and Collison the top backcourt in the country.

Joining Afflalo and Collison on the first team are USC's Nick Young, Arizona's Marcus Williams and Cal State Fullerton's Bobby Brown. NABC District 15 includes the southern half of California and Nevada, as well as Arizona, New Mexico and Hawaii.

Afflalo and Collison are now eligible for selection to the NABC All-America team.

UCLA Clinches Pac-10 Title With Win Over Washington State, 53-45
Afflalo scores 14 points as Bruins use early second-half run to defeat Cougars in Pullman.

March 1, 2007

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -Arron Afflalo scored 14 points to help No. 2 UCLA beat No. 13 Washington State 53-45 on Thursday night to wrap up its second consecutive Pac-10 title.

UCLA (26-3, 15-2) had already clinched at least a tie with WSU and the top seed in the tournament before Thursday night's victory.

Kyle Weaver scored 14 points for Washington State (23-6, 12-5), which saw its hopes for the first Pac-10 title in its history end.

After trailing by one at the half, the Bruins made 11 of their first 14 shots to open the second half and pulled away from the Cougars in a game matching the top two defenses in the conference

UCLA scored the first nine points of the second half on two baskets by Josh Shipp, one by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and a 3-pointer by Afflalo for a 31-23 lead.

Washington State missed its first six shots of the second half and did not score until Aron Baynes made two free throws with 16:06 left. The Cougars made just one field goal in the first 7 minutes of the second half.

Darren Collison's jumper gave UCLA a 45-35 lead midway through the second half.

Washington State scored six straight, with Robbie Cowgill's short jumper cutting the UCLA lead to 47-43 with 3:25 left. But Moute replied immediately with a basket for the Bruins.

Baynes' layup cut UCLA's lead to 49-45 with 2:35 left. But Shipp iced the game from the foul line.

Shipp finished with 12 points for the Bruins, who shot 51 percent in the game and held Washington State to 37 percent. The Cougars made just 8-of-28 from the field in the second half.

The Bruins have won five straight since a loss at West Virginia.

In the first, UCLA made its first five shots to take an 11-4 lead. Cowgill's slam for WSU tied the game at 16 with 5:56 left.

Daven Harmeling's 3-pointer, the only one of the game on 10 attempts for WSU, gave the Cougars a 23-22 lead with 28 seconds left, and that was the halftime score.

Washington State, which leads the conference with only nine turnovers per game, committed 10 turnovers in the first half and 14 in the game.

The Bruins lead the series 91-13, winning 12 in a row in Pullman.

Before the game, WSU presented retired basketball coach Dick Bennett with an honorary alumnus award for the three years he spent rebuilding the problem before turning it over to his son Tony this year.

SERIES: UCLA leads 88-33

#2 UCLA vs. WASHINGTON
This is the 122nd meeting between UCLA and Washington with the Bruins leading the series 88-33, including winning 32 of the last 42 games. Washington swept the season series (first time since 1987) last year, snapping a 19-game losing streak in Pauley Pavilion in the process. The Huskies posted a 69-65 victory in Los Angeles on Jan. 14, 2006 and a 70-67 win in Seattle on Feb. 11, 2006. Earlier in the season, the Bruins routed the Huskies 96-74 on New Year's Eve behind Arron Afflalo's 27 points. Bruin head coach Ben Howland is 4-4 against Washington while UW head coach Lorenzo Romar is 4-6 versus UCLA. Romar served four seasons as an assistant coach on Jim Harrick's UCLA staff from 1993-96. Additionally, UW assistant coach Cameron Dollar was a four-year (1994-97) letterman and two-year starter at UCLA, winning a national title in 1995 and three Pacific-10 Conference championships (1995, 1996 and 1997). Dollar still ranks third on the UCLA career charts in steals (214) and eighth in assists (451).

NATIONAL POLLS
UCLA is currently ranked second in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. Earlier this year, UCLA spent six weeks (Nov. 27-Jan. 1) ranked first in the AP poll and five weeks (Dec. 4-Jan. 1) atop the Coaches poll. UCLA has spent more time (134 weeks) at number one in the history of the AP poll than any other program.

HOWLAND REACHES MILESTONE VICTORY
UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland won his 250th game in the 70-65 home win over 19th-ranked USC on Feb. 7, 2007. Howland, now in his 13th season as a Division I head coach, is averaging 19.4 wins per season with still more games to play in 2006-07. Equally impressive is the fact that he won his 200th victory just last year on Nov. 19 in a 56-37 home win over Delaware State.

WHAT'S BRUIN'
UCLA ...
• Has won its second-straight Pacific-10 title and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Pac-10 Tournament.
• Has completed the first true undefeated home season (16-0) since 1974-75 (32 seasons). The 1994-95 squad was 15-0 at home, but it included a forfeit win over California (after the Bruins originally lost the game 100-93).
• Has made 200 three-point field goals, which is fourth on the season list while the 533 attempts are sixth and the .376 percentage is fifth.
• UCLA averages 34.5 points and shoots .468 from the floor, .338 from three and .578 from the line in the first half of games. In the second half, it averages 38.9 points and is shooting .519 from the floor, .417 from three and .709 from the line.
• Has outrebounded seven of its last nine opponents.
• Has won 26 or more games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1974-75 (28-4, John Wooden's last season) and the 1975-76 season (28-3, Gene Bartow's first year).

No. 2 Bruins Fall At Washington, 61-51, In Regular Season Finale
Shipp and Afflalo lead UCLA with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

March 3, 2007

Box Score

SEATTLE (AP) - Jon Brockman couldn't stop complimenting UCLA, from its bevy of talented players, to the Bruins' suffocating defense.

On Saturday, the compliments were best left for Brockman and Washington.

The Huskies bruising forward scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and Washington logged its biggest win of the season, a 61-51 upset of the second-ranked Bruins.

The Huskies used their own stifling defense, combined with superior inside play from Brockman and freshman center Spencer Hawes to physically match the Bruins' grind-it-out style.

"They outphysicaled us. They outplayed us in every aspect of the game and it's embarrassing," UCLA's Arron Afflalo said. "I don't know what we were resting on."

UCLA (26-4, 15-3 Pac-10), had little to play for with the Pac-10 Conference regular season title already wrapped up after an emotional 53-45 win Thursday night at No. 13 Washington State.

But Washington (18-12, 8-10), needed the victory for momentum heading into next week's conference tournament, which it likely must win to make the NCAA tournament. Now Washington heads to Los Angeles riding wins over No. 23 USC and now the Bruins.

"We can enjoy this all we want, but the fact of the matter is they're No. 2 in the nation, they're going to be in the tournament and we've still got some work to do," Brockman said.

Brockman and Hawes have combined for bigger games both with points and rebounds, but never against an opponent the quality of UCLA. Hawes added 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Ryan Appleby scored 13, hitting three 3-pointers.

Brockman regularly chased down loose balls giving Washington extra possessions, while the 7-foot Hawes blocked shots and controlled the glass at the defensive end.

Washington outrebounded the Bruins 44-29, and the Huskies defensive effort as a whole came as a shock given that they entered the week last in the conference giving up 75 points per game.

UCLA shot just 31 percent, and while a number of shots rimmed in-and-out, Washington's defense also slowed the Bruins offense by forcing shots with the shot clock nearly at zero.

Josh Shipp led UCLA with 13 points, but the Bruins could not overcome a season-low 20 first-half points and three scoreless stretches of 5 minutes or more. Afflalo added 12, but guard Darren Collison missed on 13 of 15 shots and finished with five points, seven under his season average.

UCLA also missed its final five shots after trimming a 16-point deficit down to one. The 51 total points was a season-low, and was still nearly enough.

"I like that our guys fought back when we got down, but it's as disappointing a loss as we've had this season," UCLA coach Ben Howland said.

Washington led by 16 midway through the second-half, when Appleby capped a 9-0 run with a fallaway 3-pointer giving the Huskies a 48-32 lead with 9:43 left. UCLA called an immediate timeout as Washington's crowd erupted, urged on by the Huskies coaching staff pumping their fists and waving their arms.

Howland's timeout worked. Afflalo scored five straight points, starting a 14-2 run. Shipp capped the run with a 3-pointer and a driving three-point play that got UCLA within 50-46.

Lorenzo Mata then followed up Collison's missed drive and the lead was just two. A pair of Justin Dentmon free throws put Washington up four, but then Collison hit just his second shot -- a step-back 3-pointer -- to get the Bruins within one.

The Huskies freely admit that earlier in the season, they would have folded under the pressure of such a surge.

"I don't know if two weeks ago we would have been able to seal off all the leaks," Brockman said.

But the Huskies answered. Hawes tipped in a Dentmon miss and Shipp's deep 3-pointer hit off the rim, starting the Bruins' final scoreless streak. Brockman was also 4 of 4 at the free-throw line in the final 37 seconds, while Mata -- a 37-percent free-throw shooter -- also missed two free throws with 25 seconds left that could have brought the Bruins within three.

"Jon Brockman and Spencer Hawes were just beasts today," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "They were twin beasts."

Arron Afflalo Named Pac-10 Player of the Year
Darren Collison named All-pac-10 first team

March 5, 2007

UCLA junior guard Arron Afflalo has been selected Pac-10 Player of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches, it was announced today.

In addition, sophomore guard Darren Collison was also named first-team All-Pac-10. Sophomore forwards Josh Shipp and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute were honorable mention selections.

UCLA and Washington State were the only schools to place two players on the All-Pac-10 team. This marks the 19th time UCLA has had multiple selections to the first team.

A member of the All-Pac-10 team a year ago, Afflalo leads the Bruins and is third in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game. Afflalo has scored in double figures in 29 consecutive games and his led the Bruins in scoring in 17 games this year.

He's currently the Pac-10's active scoring leader with 1,447 career points, which ranks 21st on UCLA's all-time scoring list.

In addition, his 199 career three-pointers rank second all-time in Bruin history. He's started 97 of a possible 98 games during his career and was a member of the 2005 Pac-10 All-Freshman team.

Afflalo is the fifth different Bruin to be honored as Pac-10 Player of the Year, joining Marques Johnson (1977), David Greenwood (1978, 79), Kenny Fields (1983) and Ed O'Bannon (1995).

Collison, in his first season as a starter, leads the Bruins in assists (6.0) and steals (2.2) and is third on the squad in scoring (12.4).

Shipp is second on the team in scoring (13.3) and averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Mbah a Moute is UCLA's leading rebounder (7.7) and is averaging 8.6 points per game.
