SERIES: UCLA leads 52-14

#2/3 UCLA vs. ARIZONA STATE
This is the 67th meeting between UCLA and Arizona State with the Bruins leading the series 52-14, including winning the last four games. After losing 22 consecutive games to the Bruins (from 1990-2000), ASU has posted a 5-8 record (since 2000). The Bruins have won three straight in Los Angeles, including last year's 69-60 win on Feb. 2, 2006. In that game, Jordan Farmar led the Bruins with 18 points while Arron Afflalo chipped in 17 more for the 14th-ranked Bruins. Bryson Krueger led the Sun Devils with 14 points and Antwi Atuahene added 12 for ASU. The last win for Arizona State in Pauley Pavilion was a 75-64 victory on Jan. 16, 2003. Curtis Millage scored a game-high 23 points for ASU in the win. The Bruins are 9-0 at home this season while the Sun Devils are 0-4 on the road. Bruin head coach Ben Howland sports an overall record of 6-4 against ASU and 3-0 in Pauley Pavilion versus the Sun Devils. Sun Devil head coach Herb Sendek is in his first season at Arizona State.

NATIONAL POLLS
UCLA is currently ranked second in the ESPN/USA Today poll (six first-place votes) and third in the Associated Press poll (seven first-place votes). Earlier this year, UCLA spent six weeks (Nov. 27-Jan. 1) ranked first in the AP poll and five weeks (Dec. 4-Jan. 1) atop the Coaches poll. UCLA has spent more time (134 weeks) at number one in the history of the AP poll than any other program.

RISE AND SHINE ... YOU'RE BURNIN' DAYLIGHT
The Bruins are no strangers to early morning wake-up calls. UCLA is 3-1 this season in games that tip-off prior to noon. The Bruins handed then sixth-ranked Texas A&M a 65-62 loss in an 11:30 a.m. tip-off at Honda Center in the John R. Wooden Classic on Dec. 9. UCLA later crushed Michigan 92-55 with an 11:00 a.m. tip in Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 23. Then the Bruins lost an 11:00 a.m. game 68-66 at 16th-ranked Oregon on Jan. 6. But the Bruins won their last morning game, a 65-64 win at USC in an 11:30 a.m. tip-off at Galen Center on Jan. 13. UCLA still has two more early morning games. The Bruins will tip at 10:00 a.m. (PST) at West Virginia on CBS (Feb. 10) and again at 10:00 a.m. (PST) at Arizona on CBS (Feb. 17).

THREE FOR US ... NONE FOR YOU
One strength of this year's team has been in three-point shooting, where UCLA is connecting on 40.2 percent (121-of-301) of its shots from beyond the arc. In Pac-10 games, that percentage is up slightly at 40.4 percent (44-of-109). In overall games, UCLA leads the Pacific-10 Conference and ranks 23rd in the country in three-point percentage. Additionally, the Bruins have shot better than 34 percent from downtown in each of the last 10 games while allowing only USC to shoot better than 34 percent from three-point territory in the last 12 contests. The Trojans sizzled the nets for 52.9 percent (9-of-17).

AND YES THEY CALL THEM THE STREAKS
UCLA junior Arron Afflalo (15 games), and sophomores Josh Shipp (11 games) and Darren Collison (10 games) are first, second and third, respectively, with the longest double-digit scoring streaks in the Pacific-10 Conference.

UCLA TO HONOR 1967 CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM
UCLA will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its 1967 NCAA Championship team on Saturday, Feb. 24, when the Bruins host Stanford. The team will have a pregame reception and be honored at halftime. Led by legendary Bruin head coach John Wooden, the '67 National Champions were 30-0 overall (the second time in school history UCLA recorded a perfect 30-0 record, matching the Bruins' first NCAA title team in 1964) and it was the Bruins' third NCAA title under Wooden (1964-65-67) in four years. UCLA was led by sophomore center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor), who earned All-American honors. He averaged 29.0 points a game, set an NCAA record by shooting .667 from the field and set the school single-game scoring record with 61 points in a 100-78 victory over Washington State on Feb. 25, 1967 in Pauley Pavilion. He also recorded UCLA's second-best (56) and third-best (45) single-game scoring marks that season. Joining Abdul-Jabbar in the starting lineup were - at guards, junior captain Michael Warren (12.7 ppg) and sophomore All-Conference Lucius Allen (15.5 ppg), and at the forwards, sophomores, Ken Heitz (6.1 ppg) and Lynn Shackelford (11.4 ppg). Also on the coaching staff were varsity assistant Jerry Norman, head freshman coach Gary Cunningham and the trainer was Bruin Hall of Famer Ducky Drake. Like this year's Bruin squad, there was not a senior on the 1966-67 roster.

YES WE WON 8)

No. 3 UCLA Tops Arizona State At Home, 60-50
Collison scores 16 points in winning effort.

Jan. 18, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Darren Collison scored 16 points to help No. 3 UCLA rally in the second half for a 60-50 win over Arizona State on Thursday night and remain tied atop the Pac-10.

Arron Afflalo added 13 points and Josh Shipp had 12 points after returning from a hamstring tear in time to outduel his little brother, Jerren, who had eight points for the Sun Devils.

The brothers clasped hands and Josh whispered in Jerren's ear as the teams greeted each other after the game.

UCLA (16-1, 5-1) is tied for first with No. 9 Oregon, a 66-59 winner over Stanford on Thursday.

Chris Polk scored 16 points to lead the Sun Devils (6-12, 0-7 Pac-10), who are winless in three conference road games and at UCLA since 2003. Jeff Pendergraph's streak of double-double games ended at nine, when he finished with eight points and three rebounds.

The Bruins ran off seven points in a row to start the second half and gain their first lead since the beginning of the game. Josh Shipp grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, then got the crowd excited with a fastbreak reverse dunk that seemed to say, "This is for you, baby brother."

When Jerren Shipp went to the line after UCLA had taken a 41-39 lead, fans chanted "Josh is better!" and the younger Shipp missed both.

Michael Roll and Collison hit consecutive 3-pointers in UCLA's 16-4 run. Collison got fouled on his shot as he fell on his backside, then pumped his right fist. He got up and made the free throw and next scored on a fastbreak off Alfred Aboya's steal for a 50-41 lead.

Afflalo sloppily tipped the ball to Jerren Shipp, who took off for the basket, but Josh Shipp was there to get a hand up and keep his freshman brother from scoring.

The Sun Devils managed just 13 points in the second half - six by Polk and five by Allen Morill. They were 1-of-10 from the floor to start, the same woes that plagued UCLA in the game's early going.

The Bruins struggled to start the game, falling behind 17-6 and going 2-of-10 from the floor, with eight of those attempts 3-pointers.

During Arizona State's run, Josh Shipp fouled brother Jerren, who completed the three-point play for the Sun Devils.

The Bruins climbed back with a 23-12 run, capped by Josh Shipp's three-point play, that tied the game at 29. He picked up his third foul 2 1/2 minutes later and didn't start the second half.

ASU outscored UCLA 8-5 to end the half ahead 37-34.

No. 3 Bruins Best Bears, 62-46
UCLA uses a strong second half to pick up a road Pac-10 win.

Jan. 25, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Arron Afflalo scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half and made all nine of his free throws, leading No. 3 UCLA past California 62-46 on Thursday night.

Josh Shipp added 12 points and threw a pretty behind-the-back bounce pass to Afflalo for a late basket, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute grabbed 11 rebounds in the Bruins' fourth straight win since a 68-66 loss at Oregon on Jan. 6 - the team's lone defeat so far.

Afflalo shot 7-for-13 and didn't score for the first time until making two free throws with 4:39 to go in the opening half.

Theo Robertson had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists and Ryan Anderson added 13 points and six boards but the Golden Bears disappointed the sellout crowd of 11,877 at Haas Pavilion, where many students packed their section about an hour before tipoff.

The Bruins (18-1, 7-1 Pac-10), coming off a sweep of the Arizona schools, finished 50 percent from the floor after a slow start and held Cal leader Ayinde Ubaka to no points and two assists on 0-for-8 shooting.
