I rarely row sweep-oar these days.  I do LW single sculling competitively, double sculls for practice sometimes.  Sweep-oar is what my students start with (and what most colleges do).

But when I was rowing sweep-oar in an eight like that one, I was (1.) rowing port (the 2nd to last guy is on starboard), and (2.) rowing stern four (usually 6 seat, sometimes stroke).
