^ although I like g-funk productions, we need to realize it's over... I don't think it's enough to change the topics/Gangsta lyrics
we need a new sound/vibe which sounds as melodic/smooth as g-funk, but still something different

what else could be melodic/smooth? jazz rap? premier/guru did that
rock rap? In all honesty, I like the more rock-ish stuff daz was doing with mike dean alot, shit is fresh. also, tracks like 'real niggaz don't die' that dre/nwa did to me is the way rock should infuse rap, mad energy and melody. that riff is still unstoppable.
blues rap? people hate on everlast, but blues is just as black and street and real of a music as rap is. and if eminem would have shut the fuck up, some cool motherfuckers could have done some cool shit with it.

and don't tell me rap can make a new melodic/smooth sound without borrowing from another genre
a)if rap people could, they would have by now
b)rap is one of the least musical musics out there. it is an art that is half music half poetry. shit is only 50% music alot of the time.
c)rap is built on borrowing from other genres.
d)look at what happens when rap tries to make a new sound: shit like "in da club" "hustlers", "get low" and "trouble" from dre are all very unique sounding and worthwhile experiments BUT the synth strings have GOT to go. shit is horribly midi-sounding.

Live motherfucking bands, that shit always sounds good. anyway....I'm down for a non g-funk production sound..i just can't imagine what. one thing is certain though: it must be smooth and melodic.

and dnice, the west does have some sick backpackers BUT theyare rarely well produced.

-T

true, but you have alot produced by Focus, Khalil, Evidence, and others so the beats are starting to match the rhymes.

It's dope. I know alot of people ain't really checking for Evidence or Dilated but it's definitely worth it. Now his sound is nothing like G-Funk or anything. Nice change of pace.

His voice has always been boring to me but he stepped it up on this one lyrically. Now I want a Iriscience solo after hearing this.

For well produced non-gangster rap check the Coup. They're really dope, you can find their last album in the HUS.
Good thread!
Threads like this should be mailed to every industry head. You all made some inteligent and interesting points.

true, i think what makes our discussions so dope is that we always take into account commercial success as well as what we want artistically.

I never said that rap should not borrow sounds from other genres. They  just have to assimilate that into the westcoast vibe, that's the only condition. I feel ya when you say that you can't imagine what. But music always evolves,
if you think like that music in general should be dead today, c'mon there are thousands sounds that are to discover, even for rap. Look how rock
stays alive with building more and more subgenres... There's always the time when somebody invents some new shit... we need just
a Dre in 92 with visions... the producers should just try something new, but it's easier to stick with the actual sound, that's the reason why the westcoast is still stuck in 96. I mean even the south get its play today, everybody say it's crap, but it's something new.
