COACH REPORT: Stan Van Gundy To Coach Pacers? Rick Adelman To Coach Rockets? etc

May 18, 2007 -- ENDING educated speculation that highly-coveted free agent coach Sam Mitchell may leave the Raptors for the Pacers or the Bobcats, the NBA's reigning Coach of the Year and Toronto team president Bryan Colangelo have come to terms, The Post has learned. According to a Canadian Mountie, the fully guaranteed agreement is for three years at $4 million per, a $2.4M raise.

This just in: Stan Van Gundy has emerged as the prohibitive favorite (over Brian Shawn and Jim Boylan) to replace Rick Carlisle in Indiana.

The Post also has learned the Rockets soon will announce Rick Adelman as their new coach, that more or less confirming my original Jeff Van Gundy-is-done story.

Adelman is a flawless choice for a team anchored by two superstars and two or three other key components. Never a self-promoter or one to demand players he must or must not have, he merely manages (never over-coaches) the personnel on tap and gets them to the playoffs - 14 out of 14 times as coach of Portland and Sacramento.

As expected, Van Gundy is back behind the microphone (for tonight's Game 6 Spurs-Suns telecast), where he has all the answers for everything that's wrong with the world and the game, and where his system always works perfectly.

It's interesting to note that the lone time one of his teams got anywhere worthwhile - the 1999 Knicks - is when players he diametrically resented coaching did their own thing.

I slouch corrected. I'm informed Larry Brown would gladly accept, if offered, the head coaching job for Charlotte or Memphis, and that family relocation and relatively low pay will not be obstacles.


Van Gundy LOVES Odom...I hope this doesn't mean a JO for Odom deal is more likely.

Based on last season, they are on the same level...And Odom has better versatility, is younger, and has more upside. I would NOT trade Odom for JO.

A Kobe/Lamar/Oneal trio would make us an instant contender.. now Kobe/Oneal would be an upgrade but not enough for a title imo..

That'd be Kobe+Lamar all over again, minus Odom's playmaking ability and plus JO's superior post defense (which we already have Kwamw for).

JO will bring a block presence that Kwame hadn't and more points than Lamar.. we'll see how the summer goes ..

More points than Lamar? I don't think so...JO barely scored more than Lamar as the first option for the Pacers, on a much lower percentage...JO is better at picking up blocks, but Kwame is better at bodying up bigs...you would trade Odom for JO and let these past years go to waste?

^^^^ we have to make everything possible to keep Lamar AND bring another impact player.. signing Mo Williams and trading Kwame for Artest (start Andrew and resign Mihm as a backup when it comes to the center spot) would be great but I know, in reality it's way complicated to make trades than we're talking.. anyways regardless what happened, we'll have to start to play some team Defense 1st.. coz we were horrible in this sector
