As Atlantic Records approaches its 60th Anniversary, the company's extraordinary urban music legacy is being carried on by an array of groundbreaking contemporary artists, as impressively borne out in yesterday's announcement of the nominations for the upcoming BET Awards 07. Atlantic and its affiliated labels earned a remarkable 11 nods, spanning a wide array of categories and a rich diversity of artists. BET will broadcast the annual event live from Los Angeles' famed Shrine Auditorium on BET on Tuesday, June 26th, at 8 pm (ET).
The nominations were revealed at a press conference co-hosted by Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist T.I., who received a nod as "Best Hip-Hop Artist." Downtown/Atlantic recording duo Gnarls Barkley received an outstanding three nominations, including "Best New Artist," "Best Group," and "Video of the Year" (for the blockbuster "Crazy" clip).
Bad Boy Records founder, CEO, and recording artist Diddy also was acknowledged with a nomination in the "Best Hip-Hop Artist" category. In addition, Diddy was honored with a "Best Collaboration" nod, for his smash single, "Last Night (Feat. Keyshia Cole)."
Furthermore, Atlantic's own Lupe Fiasco was selected alongside Gnarls as "Best New Artist," while Blue Star Entertainment International/Atlantic recording group Pretty Ricky joins the duo in the "Best Group" category.
The BET Awards 07 honored the late, great Gerald Levert with two nominations, for "Best Male R&B Artist" and the "BET J Cool Like That" prize. Also getting the nod in the "BET J Cool Like That" category was Atlantic recording artist Musiq Soulchild.
Along with his "Best Hip-Hop Artist" nomination, T.I. will be among the superstars performing live at the BET Awards 07, with others to be announced in coming weeks.
