Good point. If it wasn't for America, everyone knows that Saudi Arabia would be a bastion of human rights, democracy, and religious freedom. Just like the rest of the Islamic world.

Actually that's somewhat true.  If you go back 100 years before the Western powers overtook the Muslim world, you will find that the Ottoman Empire which ran the Middle East, had an official policy was of human rights, equality amongst races (in fact foriegners were often given more privileges under the law then citizens in what was called "Capitulations", at their chambers of government their were 14 different languages being spoken by 10 different races), and religious freedom (Christians and Jews even held many seats in the government).

As for Democracy, they had a constitutional democracy for voting for the chambers of government and parliment, and this constitutional democracy had so much authority that in 1909 they even voted to depose the Sultan!  Which in fact, by the way, that was Sultan Abdul-Hameed who goes down in history as the last great Kalifah (Islamic world leader).  The Kalif-Sultan's that would follow for the next 15 years held a position similar to the Royal Family in Britian, where it had become a tradition but the real power was shared in the Parliment and chambers of government.

Islamic doctrine teaches equality amongst the races, it's stated clearly in Qu'ran, and Muslims were offering freedom of religion long before Christians were.  As far back as the 8th Century Jews were fleeing persecution from Christians in Europe and travelling to regions administered by Muslims such as Spain where they were allowed religious freedom and privilege.
