Sticky Fingaz
- "I got my name in 1989. The Name was given to me by my other crew member 'cause I had stole some shit, but this was when I was younger. I don't steal no more from my friends and shit. I did before but I was young and dumb and full a cum. I stole something and they said, 'Yo Stick Fingas.' So we made it up. So everything I touch, I take"
Redman
- "I got hit in the face with a snowball when I was a little kid and my face turned all read. Everybody called me Redman and it just stuck."
MC Ren
- "I started with the name Master Ren 'cause you know Grandmaster Flash, and my real name is LoRENzo. Everybody called me Ren back in the day. When I started rhyming, I just put the Master on front and after that played out I put MC like in the Run DMC little era and it just stuck."
Black Rob
- "I used to be Robbie-O from the hood. I'm still Robbie-O, but Black Rob came from my man P-Diddy. When I say Black that just means the thugness of the whole aspect of being black. Black is hard. When you think about black people you think of the struggle, you think about everything that's fucked up about the game, and Rob is just my government name."
Big Kap
- "I used to play football, so back in the days when you used to hit somone real hard, they used to be like, 'Yo, I kap you.' When I used to play football I was one of the hardest-hitting guys, so they started calling me Kap, and then when I went to college to play ball it stuck. When I started DJing I just added Big in front of it."
Mos Def
- "I would always say 'mos def' to people to sort of blow them off. So I didn't have to talk to them or something like that. It sort of stuck to me."
Tash
- "Tash is short for CaTASHtrophe. I made it up. I had to shorten it because everytime I tried to get T-Shirts and stuff made, part of the name would always end up on the sleeves instead of just the back."
Guru
- "Gang Starr stands for street knowledge, intellect, and spirtituality because we wanted to do something beyond Gangsta Rap and do something more mental and spiritual. I was a big fan of Big daddy kane and KRS-One whose names both meanth something sp I came up with Guru which means: Gifted, Unilimmited, Rhymes, Universal."
Sauce money
- "I got my name Sauce Money because of growing up in Marcy. My real name is Todd and my friends used to call me Tarter Sauce. First I was Todd, than Tarter Sauce, then Sauce Money and when I started spittin' out the lyrics everybody started calling me Sauce Muthafucka. Now they call me sauce Muthafucka all the time because I don't give a fuck."
MC Lyte
- "When I was younger my mom kept reading material in the bathroom. There was a book entitled 'Dictionary of Thoughts.' There is where I found many defenitions from philosapheres on the word light. Evereything was positive and uplifting. So I snatched it or embraced it (some would say) and mad eit my own. Changed the spelling and gave the word new life. The MC came after my first couple of songs were recorded."
C-Murder
- "When I started getting down, me and P was thinkin' and I didn't know what to do. I hustled and came up with things I was going to be talking about; how seruiose I was gonna take this rap game. Plus bein' around projects you see a lot of this, a lot of that. You see a lot of murders in the hood."
Ice Cube
- "As a shorty growin up, they used to say i was cool. Somebody started me calling me Ice Cube because of that. It just stuck."
RZA
- "I have many different titles with my different artributes. Sometimes they call me Bobby digital, Rakeem Allah, but I'm mostly known as RZA. The RZA is actually and acronym for Rakeem Zig Zag Zig Allah. It's like a slang we used to do in Shaolin back in the days or whatever. Niggaz started callin me RZA Raw, but then I went to the Mathematics of it and broke it down, I zigged and I zagged and I had to zig again to reach Allah."
Too $hort
- "I was 5'2" when I got out of High school, but I grew later."
Charli Baltimore
- "I was watching this movie called 'Long Kiss Goodnight.' Geena Davis was in it and she had a split personality; sort of an alter ego called Charly Baltimore. I thought the name was kinda' cool. I was watching the movie with Big in the hospital after he was in the car accident and I was like, 'That's a hot name.' My old name was Tiflon 'cause my real name is Tiffany but Big said that i was now gunna be Charli Baltimore because it sounded like it could be an Italian Jersey housewife."
