Need some help with these Alicia Keys lyrics

I'm going to use Alicia's song "Like You'll Never See Me Again" in one of my English lessons next week, but there's one part in the lyrics that I don't really understand myself. Anyone here who knows what she means in that particular part (it's highlighted)? Thx for the help.

-->I don't wanna forget the present is a gift - either she's saying something different and hence why I don't understand that line, or she IS saying that but then I don't know what she means by it.

I would say the she's saying that the "present" time that she is spending with that someone special is a gift.  So instead of worrying about if she will be able to spend time with the person in the future etc.. then she should cherish the "present" time she gets to spend with that person and it's a gift to her.

I kept thinking of the word 'present' in the sense of a 'gift', so that really didn't make any sense to me. I never thought of looking at it in the sense of 'the present time'. Stupid of me

Well, I'm an English teacher and last week we started a new chapter on "Love" in our textbook. So I decided to go beyond the subject matter for a while, and use Alicia's song. Just a little extra for my students. I'm also gonna use "November Rain" (song + video).

And yeah, November Rain is indeed one hell of a great song. Sort of difficult lyrics to explain to 16-year-old whose native language is Dutch, but I'll give it a shot
