What makes an artists style West or East Coastish

East Coast Sound- Artists use more metaphors, roughneck beats and rhymes

West Coast Sound-  More laid back.  Gang influence

Detroit Sound- Dirty, sick, rappers dissing themselves, their own mothers.

Midwest- Way behind the times.  Production wise and lyrically

South- ignorance (except Atlanta, they got a little bit of everything)

I want ya'll to generalize with this topic,  their are exceptions everywhere, but what characteristics do certain city's bring to the rap game as a whole.

i think its the music that is the main difference.
to generalize - the wests producers usually use a lot of instrumentation, percussion, synths etc.
east has rough dirty drums and hard looping basslines.
south has that bounce sound, fast bpm's

depends on the producer of course, but thats the traditional sounds of each.

and when it comes to rhymes its even harder to generalize cuz theres a lot of excellent lyricists on the wes (defari, saafir, etc) and now a lot of gangsta rappers on the east.

but traditionally i agree with inifintes definitions, except for midwest, there are some amazing lyricists from the mid eg TechN9ne

Ive always found East coast music (with no disrespect to tha west) deeper, then West coast, whilst West coast is Party and gang related type music.

East Coast are focused on the lyrics, West Coast are focused on flow and funky beats....West Coast uses funk...East Coast doesn't....

Funk is a big part of the West Coast....

I agree with NIK. We got the funk, the whole funk, nothin but the funk.

But I definitely have to disagree about the South. They aren't ignorant. They are the most unique than any other style of hip-hop. Their rhymes make perfect sense, you just gotta be from there to understand the slang. My cousin from Memphis, Tenn. understands all of it. Alot of cats from their got mad flow.

They are both totally different.  Check out my article, "Working Outside The West" @ wckillaz.  Give that a read, I kind of explained it in one part.

The West Coast is more smooth, laid back & funky in my opinion.  It could also be very rugged and straight @ you also.
