Guilty Simpson - Ode To the Ghetto

I know very little about the Detroit hip-hop scene, other than that's it's pretty trendy at the moment. I don't know a great deal about Dilla or his legacy, had never heard of Guilty Simpson until his feature on 'Caltroit', and have heard of Stones Throw but don't know much about the label (it's Peanut Butter Wolf's, right?). I basically bought this because most mainstream hip-hop now sucks and I wanted something new in terms of rappity-rap to listen to.
And shit, it's pretty fucking good. This guy sounds great on the mic - one of the best voices for emceeing I've heard in a long time, reminds me of a heavier sounding Beanie Segal. Some of the punchlines are superb ("It's like I was on parole / I told her I was Guilty and she put me in the hole") plus the lyrics generally are really strong, even if a lot of it simple tough-guy talk. And the beats are inventive, although I thought the Dilla track was the weakest thing there. Plus, it's a short album (all the best albums fit into my door-to-door commute to work in the morning. This is there with 'Face's 'Fix'.)
I'm always late with shit like this because I tend to buy retail abums rather than download leaks, so apologies if this has been discussed already. But what's the general consensus from people who know more about this than me? (ie. Dilla/Detroits Stans, lol, just kidding.)

i gotta agree, tight ass album! and nah, i don't think it has been discussed before...
i ain't too much into the alternative/independent scene either tho...i heard a couple of stones throw things here n there, but wasn't really feelin most of it... too "different" for me *lol* i heard besides guilty simpson there's this cat called roc c...he's also more into the hardcore kinda stuff... but haven't actually heard anything besides a track that got posted in the w/c section...

I dont know. Im not a huge fan of Black Milk/Dilla production so although the rapping was hot i found it hard to like the beats. Guilty is definately one to watch and Detroit sitting on some real talent in him Black Milk, Obie and Royce. Have to wait and see what they do with it
