Ice Cube Defends Gangster Rap To Michael Eisner
« on: May 21, 2008, 04:13:50 AM »
Last night Ice Cube made an appearance on Michael Eisner’s talk show Conversations with Michael Eisner. The former CEO of Disney interviewed Cube on his success, his new ventures, and on his latest music video.
Eisner pointed out the atrocities in his music video “Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It,” and saw clearly the irony in the parallels between rap music and past events. Ice Cube reiterated this thought as he stated, “Last year with Don Imus and the Virginia Tech shooting, and even Michael Vick and the dog fighting, there was this swirl in the media that gangsta rap is the root of all evil, almost. I started thinking how ironic that is. Gangsta rap was basically invented in 1985, but if you was around in 1984, you know how crazy it was in the world. So how could gangsta rap be the cause of all these global problems?”
One topic that Ice Cube touched on briefly was the internal “conflict” between him and Oprah. As you may already know, Ice Cube was slighted last year from attending one of her shows to celebrate the documentary Black.White, a documentary that Cube executive produced. The rapper-turned-actor then accused Oprah of neglecting his presence on her show because of his representation in rap music (something Oprah has been an advocate against). However, Cube let Eisner know the situation is not a concern anymore. “I’m fine with that, you know, I’ve gotten this far without Oprah. I’m not worried about it. It would have been nice to show that my company did bring that show to America, with a little help from people like R.J. Cutler. But, you know, it is what it is.”
