"WE BE BALLIN'" Master Reference CD - A&M Records, Post Production - 1998.

Project History:

This particular collaboration was recorded and mixed at A&M Recording Studios in 1998 in La Brea avenue, Hollywood, California.


From the Producer, Rick Dutch (quote):
“I produced and co-wrote the title track from "The Player's Club" Movie (Ice Cube's Directorial Debut) entitled "We Be Clubbin'" in 1997. The song was an instant hit and the following year, we all thought it to be a good idea to do a remix version of the song entitled "We Be Ballin'" featuring Michael Jackson & Shaquille O'Neal.
The song was to be released on an NBA Compilation album set to be released that year and was also going to be featured in the infamous NBA "I Love This Game" themed commercials. The NBA season was cut in half that year due to the player initiated strike against the league and the entire project seemed to just disappear. The Song was HOTT and there was a lot of buzz around the song at that time but no one ever wanted to revive the idea and it was left alone. ...The only folks I know to have copies of the record are Michael Jackson, Ice Cube and myself and maybe less than a handful of other people...”

Master CD:

1. Master Mix (5:02):

This mix is of incredible master quality and production - The purity and the depth are there and never cease to amaze the listener. Unlike the fake fan version, this version includes never-before-heard verses by Shaq and Ice cube, with different lyrics to compliment a truly unique composition.
… “ I Love This Game!!! ... HAHA!!! ” ...
The mastering transforms the song into nothing that’s been heard before; there are many added sounds such as the ringing of police force that are mixed into the song’s production – especially during the chorus of Michael. In addition, Michael’s chorus and lyrics change completely during the last refrain (unheard in the fake internet version).


2. Street Mix (5:14):

The Street version is significantly different to the preceding Master version. It has a more edgy feel to it as opposed to the Master Mix. Michael’s voice is wonderful and clear as always; the same can be said with Shaq and Ice Cube's rap performances throughout. The Street Mix also includes an exclusive acapella solo by Ice Cube towards the end of the track.
