Was President Carter right on energy?

I find this skeptical. Even today, with such high gas prices and high demand for fuel efficient cars, many cars aren't getting 30mpg. So how could they "easily achieve 30mpg" in 1985?

the Japanese did, we could have stole their technology the same way they stole ours with Toyotas being modeled after Chevy.
