Did you install Firmware 3.0 by any chance?
Firmware 3.0 is known to do that.
Try installing Firmware 3.1 - it was released as a hot-fix and is not mandatory, so you'll have to do it manually by using Update System option (or something like that).
It might work after that, but not necessarily.
If you already have 3.1 installed, then bad luck - you're one of lots of people with PS3s bricked by faulty firmware.

were you hearing clicking sounds before it stop reading disk?.......my ps3 is making clicking sounds and i heard it could be 3 things....the fan, hdd, or the disk reader.

The less than 2% failure rate for the PS3 is way better than 360s.

It's still a hassle to turn in your system, 2-4 times although it's free.  The good game argument is becoming less and less true as the PS3 gets older and older.  By far the best title the 360 had was Bioshock, which is now on the PS3.  Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 alone is worth having a PS3.  $300 for a 120GB PS3 with a built in BluRay player does not cost "way more" than a $250 360Xbox Pro 60GB with no bluray built it.

I've been playing video games for more than 15 years now, and Uncharted 2 has been the best gaming experience of my life.  Any true lover of gaming would be amazed by it.  It's also the only game that has blended story, characters, gameplay perfectly nothing comes close.  If anybody does purchase a PS3, obviously Uncharted 2 isn't the only game they will be able to play.  You'll get to play all the Insomniac games, you'll get to play the best RPG game (Demon's Souls) in this generation( yes better than Oblivion, Fable, and Fallout 3)  that has a throw back difficulty level that brings you back to the trial and error era of video games.  You get to play LBP, MGS 4.  And of course the P4P king of racing simulators is coming soon, GT5.  And you get to play the not so noob friendly game of Killzone 2.
