Anyone go Notting Hill Carnival???
« on: August 26, 2008, 06:43:24 AM »
Thought it was pretty good. Watched the floats and found some good soundsystems. Only problem was that the police were making streets one way which made it long to get around the carnival. Didn't see much pop off like in recent years although there was some riots last night. You can tell whos gonna start shit cause aint no need to be wearing you hood up when its warm, so if ur smart u can dodge the trouble.

COPS were pelted with missiles after a riot broke out as they stopped a 180-strong gang of thugs travelling to the Notting Hill Carnival.
Trouble erupted when 1,620 officers formed a ring of steel around the group near Oval cricket ground, South London.

Police in riot gear were hit by bricks and stones as they tried to arrest troublemakers.

One officer was hit in the face with a bottle.

A spokesman said: “It is not known how many officers were injured.”

Cops acted after a tip-off that the gang — most of whom are known offenders — planned to cause mayhem at the carnival.

Officers contained them at 4pm and refused to let them board public transport.

It turned ugly when they were still held there about three hours later.

The tactic, last used against May Day protesters in Oxford Street, is designed to break the spirit of thugs by denying them their liberty.

Police commandeered two double deckers and three bendibuses to take more than 100 of the rioters to South London police stations.

A number of knives were seized along with a Taser gun, CS spray and a baseball bat.

A total of 488 were reportedly arrested during the event – 330 in the Notting Hill area and 158 around Oval.

Chief Insp Jo Edwards said: “For over two hours our officers were faced with a hardcore, mainly of young men, who came to carnival not to enjoy the event but to fight, commit crime and cause trouble."

The two-day extravaganza, themed Welcoming The World, saw huge crowds party in the streets of west London.

There were also 334 incidents of reported crime.
