I tried, but 'Sweet Lord' > 'Murs for President'

I can't front, from the moment Murs and 9th Wonder started goofing around imitating the intro to 'Express Yourself', I was sold on their 'Sweet Lord' project. How many times do you get a free album of that kind of quality? Every beat was banging and even the more sentimental songs Murs is apt to do didn't come off as corny.

So I was pretty amped for 'Murs for President'. But holy moly, I can't get into it. God knows I've tried, but it's one of those albums I put on when I'm riding the train home in the evening, then wind up thinking about some other shit and realise I'm not really even listening to.

I mean, some of the songs  - that 'Fly' track with will.i.am for example - are just horrible. Then there are songs like 'You Don't Know Me' which is such a desperate clone of a Dre beat it's unreal. And then there's 'Everything', which sounds hopeful until the chorus, when you realise he's sampled motherfucking JAMES BLUNT. And there's not one 9th beat that's as good as the ten he had on 'Sweet Lord'. What the fuck is that imbalance of quality about?

The sole consolation is that I would have been quite happy to pay for the 'Sweet Lord' album, it was that good. So I just feel like my £17 (motherfucking HMV) went to that instead.

Is anyone else actually feeling this album?

I also tried, but I can't get into it either. Then again... I'm not a fan of anything Murs has done. It's just not my style of rap :)

See, I'm out of the loop on that - 'Sweet Lord' was actually the first Murs album I heard. But I just think it sounds way, way more thought out and cohesive than '...President'.

As long as you like his material, it's all love.

He realized that "Murs for President" was aiming at several crowds, while "Sweet Lord" was for his main target fanbase. He did it just to let them know nothing has changed on his part, but for him to have commercial backing, he had to put out a more diverse album, which is what President is.

I feel it could have had different direction, but overall, he did a great job of making songs that would appeal to every potential fanbase he has. He did the three that were obvious West Coast tracks, because most L.A. residents who prefer that West Coast sound to the soul had never heard anything from him on this vibe.

Everyone who's heard his album with Terrace Martin has been saying it sounds great, and will probably have a similar effect as "Sweet Lord" with it being pushed independent or free, but will be an album made for the fans to love.
