excuse me if this is a stupid question, but what exactly is an exit poll and how can anybody be certain they are accurate representations?

Institutions like CNN take people at random after they exit the polls and make them fill out sheets with all kinds of question. You don't give your name or shit, but certain facts about yourself and some of your values. Of course, people can lie there. But many people love to profile themselves correctly, being proud of who and how they are and shit. I know I wouldn't lie in such a poll. It's anonymous, after all.
