Recommend some good American newspapers, magazines

I've read the Time magazine before, I wasn't very impressed and found it quite leaning at that time. It's about 5 years ago, though. Aren't there any good ones out that are lesser known? I already checked out the New York Times, not that I find it bad or anything, I just wonder if there are some jewels that are not very known globally.

Steve Lopez is a great LA Times writer, easily the best in the LA Times.
