Yeah, they are resting him when him playing doesn't alter the outcome.

Like, against teams like Thunder, who are so horrible that Phoenix takes care of them even without the great Shaquille O'Neal.

Or, also, in games that Phoenix will lose regardless. Like against a good team like NO, when Nash can't play.

I approve that system.
I don't see how conceding defeat to any team you deem elite is good a good system. What message are you sending your players? "Always give 100%, unless it's a really good team that we can't win anyways".

^If Nash was in, I'm sure they would have went for the win. But beating NO without Nash is pretty unrealistic. I'm cynical, so I like that system. Of course, sending that message to your players might not be the best decision, I think they didn't tell it like this, but be confident it is exactly what Porter or whoever made the call to rest Shaq was thinking.
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

Shaq's stats the game after his "rest game": 1-6 FG, 4 points, 5 rebounds.
Rest strategy=Failure

So are you saying the other times when he's put up big numbers it was a good idea?

Imo it's not a huge deal for him to take a day off, I agree that Shaq has never had a great work ethic but he's in the last part of his career. When MJ was on the wizards he fucked himself over big time trying to play heavy minutes every night on fucked up knees...granted the situation isn't the same but dude's just old.

Judging by the Suns' record, I can't say this was the best of strategies.
