What do you guys think of school vouchers?

I heard an interesting analogy about school vouchers by Milton Friedman...

He compared it to a grocery store.  He said that the current system subsidizers the producer (the grocery store, the schools, the teacher), while a school voucher system would subsidize the consumer (the students).

Therefore the grocery stores (schools) would still make their money, because the voucher demands that the money be spent on education, yet at the same time you would stimulate competition amongst educational institutions who would then have to compete for their income.  Citizens would have choices on where to spend their money rather than being forced to send their kids to failing schools.  So schools would naturally become more productive and successful; otherwise they would fail.  The schools that were efficient would naturally succeed.

Im always in favor of ways to upgrade the public school system, particularly in poorer communities. But, how would u deal with the problem of overpopulation of certain schools? Parents might all send their children to one school in the area, leading to over-population of that school, poorer teacher to student ratios at that school, and poorer education for each individual student.
