Question For The Jewish People

I Have A Question. I work with a lot of jewish people and I always notice this wood thing at the front of their businesses on the door. What is that?! I always want to ask, but I just rush through and I am in and out with whatever I am doing there. I was just wondering what it was and it's significance.
