Appearing on other rappers' mixtapes doesn't mean he's getting paid for it. Its different on the underground level. You appear on someone's joint and they appear on your joint. Unless the song blows up I doubt he's getting paid for it.

There's also a thing called "advances". You really don't make much money off album sales since most of your sales go back to the label for all the expenses they have collected for promotion, budget, etc. The only real money you get upfront is an advance which if you're hot property can be fairly lucrative. Your advance is guaranteed money whether you sell one record or the album gets permanetly shelved. The rappers who are smart business men will use that money wisely and find a way to turn a profit with it. There's also the other side who think it's just the beginning and blow it all on cars and jewelry.

Crooked probably gets some fairly decent publishing money off of those Death Row albums he appeared on. Granted, they weren't multi-platinum affairs but he probably eats all right off of them.

But their album selling well and getting airplay gets them all those things. I don't see Crooked making money from all that because he isn't a big star.
