IAJ: What’s going on S1?

S1: Nothing much dude. Just stayin' in the lab all day, everyday and
taking care of the fam. You know how it is.

IAJ: Right right I got you, so at what age did you start producing
music and what inspired
you to do so?

S1: I've been doing music for about 13 years now but didn't actually
seriously start producing until 2001. My cousin(Myth) and I had
a rap group by the name of Symbolyc Elementz(Source Unsigned Hype back
in 96') and when we started we were using other artist beats. So I
became curious on how beats where made and I ventured into the Art of
Music Production.

IAJ: So is that how you chose the name S1 for yourself?

S1: Well S1 is short for Symbolyc One(which was given to me by this girl I went to college with). I'm still referred to as both names but most people called me S1 for short.

IAJ: I also read that you have a deal with MTV for shows like Yo Mama
and Run's house which you must be extremely proud of. How did this
come about and how much does it differ from working with artists?

S1: Some of my recent TV Show placements have been The View, Access Hollywood, TMZ, and CSI Miami. These are just music liscencings that come from several different sources. For some, I work with several TV Placement Library companies. Some come from relationships I've been able to build over the term of my career and others from the relationships my managers, consultants, and other industry people I work with have as well. Alot of the library projects that I work on, have certain criteria that must be met. For instance, they will tell me that a certain project must be real dramatic and every 4 bars must have a certain musical change in it. So it really just depends on the requirements they give for each project. Then others will just use the beat as is, without any nessecary changes needed.
IAJ: Any tips that you can drop in how to make the mix sound better,
make the drums more crispy and stuff? Also if you could give some EQ
tips for individual instruments as well as compression tips

S1: Mixing is always about using your ears. There are certain plugins(Waves) that I use all the times when mixing but at times it just depends on the characteristics of the sound as to how the plugin is used. So it definitely varies from song to song. As for EQ, each instrument has its own characteristics as well. You have to use your ear to find out what frequency of that instrument you want to boost or cut. Once you figure out what works for your ears and the monitors that your referencing on, your mixes will improve greatly.

IAJ: The virtual instruments are a big part in alot of producers beats
Some recommendations from your side? S1: I've been using the IK Multimedia stuff like the Philharmonik and Sample Moog plugins. I'm about to start using the Native Instruments Virtual plugins as well. In fact, Im going out to get them tommorrow. :)

IAJ: We know alot of producers prefer to make beats from scratch but
some also love sampling. What about you Sample or “from scratch”?

S1: I've always been half and half when it comes to Sampling and Original beats. I usually just go off my mood or what I'm feeling at the times. I work with dope musicians (Caleb - Keys, D Madness - Bass and Guitar) so lately I've been making my own samples and then chopping them up as they were samples I got from records. But I still chop from records as well and add live instumentation to it.

IAJ: I know you have made beats for Juice (I AM LEGEND, DIAMONDS, and
I LUV IT), and they have all gotten pretty good feedback. Can we still
expect Juice on S1 beats in the future?

S1: Most Definitely. Juice has been coming to me for production alot
recently so I'm grateful for that. We've been doing alot of music together. Dude is the Next
for real! Every Song that I've produced for him he's definitely done
it justice. He's been lookin out alot.

IAJ: Can we expect production from you on his debut album ‘The Anticipated’?

S1: Yessir. I been sending beats to Juice every week and he's been picking from each batch that I send. I'm not sure which joints are slated for the album yet but I'm sure a few will be included on the release. Cant wait to hear the album as a whole. I know its going to be incredible!

IAJ: Who else have you worked with, and can we expect you to work with soon?

S1: I've worked with Playaz Circle, Nipsey Hussle, Little Brother,
Erykah Badu, Rah Digga, Mack Maine, Inspectah Deck, Blu, my group,
Strange Fruit Project, and many more artist. Alot of my major artist
joints don’t see the light of day tho. or they'll just end up on
artist mixtapes. :( lol

IAJ: If you could work with any artist(s) past or present, who would
that/they be?

S1: Aww mann...Hard Question but I would have to say Andre 3000. And
the crazy thing is I talked to him and sent him a batch of beats over
a few months ago and he hit me back saying "These tracks are NUTZ!"
Then he put me on his top 8 friends on his myspace page and he left a
message with my son(VohnBeatz) saying that he's trying to get some of
my material on his new album. So I'm praying that this situation
blossoms into something special.

IAJ: Wow that’s crazy, something like that could really put you on a
whole new level!

S1: Yes it could. I been put in some really good situations during my production career. Its just for some reason most of them fall by the wasteside but I gotta keep on trucking and planting new seeds constantly. It never stops! lol

IAJ: Besides yourself, what producer in your opinion is really doing
their thing right now and why?

S1: Once again, another hard question to answer...lol I would have
to say my top from what I've heard lately would be Justice League, DJ
Khalil and M-Phazes. Those dudes are crazy and I luv the consistency
of great musicianship in their work. But they are so many producers
thats dope right now to me.

IAJ: I just have to say, personally your top 5, and im sure once more
comes out and people hear more from you, others will think the same.

S1: Thanks alot man. I've been gettin that alot from random people all over and I'm grateful that people actually embrace my music like that. It means alot and thanks again.

IAJ: There is a lot of entrepreneur producers out there. What advice
do you have for them?

S1: Quality over Quantity. Alot of producers are hot right now
because they are on every artist album that comes out but the music quality is not up
to par. Quality should be the first priority over quantity.

IAJ: Alright S1 thanks for doing the interview with the site. Any
shout outs? And can you drop some links to where people can contact
you?

S1: I wanna give a big shout out to my team. Caleb(Production Partner/Keys Player), D-Madness(Bass and Guitar). Cassette Union, My Crew, Aeons, Strange Fruit Project, B Wells Mngmnt, and all those who been supporting and helping out in any way. Also a HUGE shout out to my Beautiful Wife, who serves as my assistant and PR rep....lol and my 2 sons - Deiondre and Javohn(VohnBeatz). Google VohnBeatz(11 year old producer)! :)
