BREAKING NEWS: VIKINGS trading for Aaron Rodgers!

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN--Just days after signing future Hall of Famer Brett Favre to a one-year deal, the Minnesota Vikings have acquired Favre’s old backup, Aaron Rodgers, in a trade with the Packers. Rodgers will assume his former position as backup to Favre in a move that “just made sense,” according to Vikings coach Brad Childress.

“It just made sense to pick up Aaron after getting Brett,” Childress told WCCO in Minneapolis. “Favre is comfortable having Aaron as a backup, and Aaron is used to the pressures of playing second fiddle to Brett. Also, there might be situations where we have both quarterbacks on the field at the same time, like during time-outs when Aaron is running Brett's water bottle out to him.”

The Vikings sent quarterback Sage Rosenfels along with next year's first round pick to the Packers for Rodgers. When asked how he felt Rodgers would react to the news, Childress said he wasn't worried.

“I’m not worried about Aaron at all,” Childress said. “He has a great attitude and he’s very professional. I’ll just explain to him that we think very highly of him as a backup quarterback and that, most importantly, Brett feels comfortable having him around. Whatever we need to do to make Brett comfortable, we’ll do, including pretending he's staying retired so he can skip training camp.”

Nonetheless, the decision was devastating for Rodgers, who finally inherited the Packers’ starting job after years of waiting for Favre to retire.

“Aaron has been blindsided by this news,” said a source close to the team. “He gave so much to the Packers, and what did he get in return? A knife in the back. Well, now he’s going to want to get revenge on Ted Thompson. I suppose he should get in line – behind Brett Favre, as usual.”

Teammates say Rodgers was alerted to the trade via a text message from Thompson, which simply read “Trade to Minny. Bye!” By Monday afternoon, his locker was cleaned out and a “Welcome, Sage” banner hung above the entrance to the team’s training camp facility.

Publicly, however, Thompson thanked Rodgers and insisted the trade had nothing to do with his performance.

“Aaron did a great job for us and we really appreciate his hard work,” Thompson told Dan Patrick. “We just felt like this was the right move for us to make. Plus, to me and millions of others, Aaron will always be a backup quarterback. He’s like America’s backup! Having him as a starter was like Ed McMahon taking over the Tonight Show or Vanna White hosting Wheel of Fortune. Or the Taliban’s Supreme Commander in Pakistan Baitullah Mehsud’s top spokesman, Maulvi Umar, taking over operations in the region. It just wasn't as much fun.”

ESPN’s Chris Carter reported this morning that Favre will start Friday night’s game against the Chiefs. Rodgers is expected to see some time with the second team.

“Favre will be the starter Friday night and Rodgers will come in second,” Carter announced. “That’s just how Brett wants it, that’s his comfort zone, and he’s going to be very pleased with the arrangement. The only downside for him is that he’s going to have to go through all the trouble of memorizing the kid’s name again.”
