Warren G Interview
« on: September 14, 2009, 03:40:59 PM »
Raptalk.Net: What is the release date for “The G-Files?”

Warren G: The release date is September 29th.

Raptalk.Net: The album has been through a few delays. What was the reasoning behind that?

Warren G: I just wanted to add different things to the record. I didn’t know if it was ready so I just pulled it back. I added a few things like I just added a few tracks. The game is missing my boy Nate Dogg so I added a record with me and Nate Dogg on it; that’s genuine Warren G. it wasn’t there and now I put that there. It’s a song called “100 Miles & Running” which also has Raekwon on it with Nate Dogg singing on the hook. That element wasn’t there so I put that there.

I ended up putting another song there with my boy RBX. I put him in and now we have Warren G with RBX on there. I had to add my G-Funk to the project; I had to put that in. Somehow someway, the track listing got leaked to the internet and the people were angry they didn’t see a few things, especially Nate Dogg. I was like damn; they’re checking me right now. I said ok, I got this and boom, I made some changes real quick and they were some great changes. It’s going to be nice for the record.

Raptalk.Net: We’re going to get into all of that. Speaking of the changes, do you think it’s important to show that you’re an artist who listens to the fans? You saw they were angry with no Nate Dogg so you made a chance to include Nate Dogg on the album.

Warren G: The fans are major important. That’s who makes the artist. I make the good music and the fans need to accept your story. When they accepted me, ten million people have accepted me as far as loving what I do. I want to keep bringing them good music because that’s what I love the people to feel, what I’m talking about and to understand it. It’s about them; it’s about the fans. I know I make good music but there is no point of me continuing to make good music if the fans aren’t into it; that isn’t cool. So I had to work with the fans on this one because I have love for people who love what I do. That’s the most important part of music; having people that love what you do. So of course I went ahead and make them as happy as possible; that’s what it’s all about.

Raptalk.Net: No doubt. How would you describe the overall sound of the project?

Warren G: I’m more partying on this record. I’m partying, not really on any heavy topics. Actually I have two songs, one called “Hold On” that is basically saying for everybody out here in the world going through problems and the way our economy is, just hold on and keep your head up. I’m sending that message out there. And then I have another song called “What’s Wrong” where it’s asking what’s wrong. On my verse on that song, I touch on a lot of the stuff I used to see when I was growing up and the people I used to see and I was like wow, I looked up to that. At the same time, you have to ask yourself what’s wrong. Is that something that you want to do? Do you want to be like that, or do you want to make a change?

Other than that, you have “True Star” which is a great record giving a little insight on me to the people who don’t know me, and it’s telling them you can be a star if you listen to what I’m saying and if you follow what I do, you can get there. I have “Swagger Rich” with Snoop Dogg that is on some Hip-Hop, electro, G-Funk – it’s something that I wanted to do different and let the fans see that I do different stuff too. I still have that soulfulness and G-Funk in my music which you will hear on the album, you’ll see it there because it didn’t go anywhere. I just tried a few different things because that’s where the game is – on that electro, hip-hop type of vibe. I did something close to that. But I still have all of my G-Funk within’ the album.

What I will do is when I let the next record go, which may be the record with me, Nate Dogg & Raekwon (editor’s note: leaked this past week), that will bring them in and that’s when they’ll hear that real G-Funk that there looking for and want to hear. I look at the blogs and I listen to what the haters have to say. It’s just the same people every time. There is this one dude who is in love with me, he just talks about me all the time so bad. Why are you wasting your time talking about me? If you don’t like me, why are you talking about me? If you don’t like me, don’t waste your conversation. Go somewhere else with that because I don’t need that negative vibe in this positive thing I have going here.

Raptalk.Net: I feel you on that. And “Swagger Rich” with Snoop Dogg is the single right now. Is there a music video in the works for that track?

Warren G: That’s like a warm-up. I have some things that are getting ready to come right there with that. We have a lot of great music coming.

Raptalk.Net: Talk to us about working with E1/TTL to release the album.

Warren G: They came in and we met and talked about it. We wanted to make this independent thing work. E1 believed in me. It’s all good. It’s much love to them for believing in Warren G and my brand. That’s what it is. We are going to independently make it do what it do. I’m not the type of artist looking for that humongous first week or this, that and this. I just want to get my music out there to the fans that love Warren G. I want them to hear what I do. I make hit records, that’s what I do. TTL and E1 are opening that door for the people to hear that.

Raptalk.Net: Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Raekwon & RBX are definitely on the album. What other guest appearances do you have?

Warren G: Travis Barker is on the album doing drums. I have a few up and coming artists that I have on there. I’m a producer so I like to feature a lot of artists and let them get their shine on and hopefully from there, they’re careers can start. Other that that, those are the guys that are on the record right now.

Raptalk.Net: How Come “Mr. DJ” and “Gigolo’s Get Lonely 2” didn’t make the album?

Warren G: The reason why they didn’t make the album as far as “Mr. DJ” is that I could not find the sample that I used. I should have labeled or named it when I did it but I just did it. I couldn’t find it and I didn’t want to put it on the record and then get sued. “Gigolo’s Get Lonely 2”, I reached out to Morris Day and his management and they never got back to me on if I could use it. I just went on and kept moving. I think the record is incredible and it’s still connected to what I’m doing, both of those records are out there to let you know that I make great records. This is Warren G and I’m not going anywhere.

Raptalk.Net: When was the Nate Dogg track completed? The one with Raekwon.

Warren G: That was completed a few months ago. That was done a few months ago. I already had Nate on that record. I and Raekwon linked up after we ran into each other coming back from the all-stars. I told him I wanted to work with him and h thought it was cool. I gave him a call and he came to the studio. We just got in there and vibed and came up with that record which is a nice record.

Raptalk.Net: So you already had Nate on the record; he got on it before his strokes. You probably get this a lot but can we get an update on his status?

Warren G: Nate Dogg is in recovery. He had two strokes so it’s kind of a slow recovery but he is recovering. Hopefully it will speed up soon. He’s in good hands. He has great people working with him to get him back up to his status. I can’t wait because that’s my dog.

Raptalk.Net: Did you handle all of the production on the album?

Warren G: I did all of the production except for one record because THX did a beat for me. It’s a song called “True Star”, the one I was telling you about. He did that on there and it’s a nice record.

Raptalk.Net: What did you like about THX and what he brought to the table since he’s the only other featured producer?

Warren G: He came with that heat. It’s a record that I felt I could rap on. It fit Warren G so I wanted it because it was me.

Raptalk.Net: Where do you think this album stands out in your catalog?

Warren G: All the records that I’ve done are incredible records to me. I’m not going to separate and say a record was better than the others. Every record I’ve done, I put my foot into it. There all great records. You can listen to every record I’ve done and this is the 7th one. You can look at every record and go through the whole album; you can ride through it. You have records that came out today and you may hear the single on the radio and when you get into the album, it’s a bunch of bullshit. I make sure my records are good top to bottom. That’s how you make a great record. It may not be a double album or anything (laughs) but it’s going to be a great record for you to listen to; I’ll tell you that. I rate this album just like the other records – Good (laughs), incredible.

Raptalk.Net: Talk about the rumor about Def Jam re-releasing your first album with a “Regulate” remake with Akon.

Warren G: Well that’s new news to me (laughs). I mean if they re-release it, I need to re-release it. I don’t need Def Jam to re-release it.

Raptalk.Net: So there won’t be a “Regulate” remake with Akon?

Warren G: If they talk about it, that’s something me and him could do; that would be dope. Where did you hear that at? (laughs)

Raptalk.Net: To be honest, I just read it online somewhere. It didn’t seem confirmed or anything, just a rumor so I figured I’d ask about it.

Warren G: I can dig it. It’s all good. as long as they get the business right, we’re good. Let’s get it right.

Raptalk.Net: You reached out to Knoc-turn’al recently. Was he a potential last minute addition to the album?

Warren G: I reached out to Knoc-turn’al because of a record me and him did that is so incredible that I was going to put it on this album, but I didn’t have enough time; the clock ran out on me about getting it finished, but I was trying to. I have a lot of other things in the future so you will hear that record. It may not be on this album but it will end up on something. I’m not mad, that’s what it is.

Raptalk.Net: What’s next up for Warren G?

Warren G: Film, TV and production. I have to get back into the way I started which is production. I’m putting together a production team right now. We’re going to get out there and regulate this industry and show them this is how you do it as far as music.

Raptalk.Net: You’re a great producer so how come you don’t reach out for more production on other artists’ projects?

Warren G: I did a video blog a few weeks ago with Maestro and I did a part where I played some tracks and I said this is what I would do for Jay-Z. Man, do you know how many people hit him about it? People called it the dopest track they heard. They were saying all kinds of stuff because of how dope the music was. I hope Jay-Z hears that and reaches out to his boy because we can get it on.

Raptalk.Net: Thanks a whole lot for your time Warren. “The G-Files” is in stores September 29th. Do you have any last words for www.raptalk.net before I let you go?

Warren G: Much love to everybody that supports Warren G. I want to thank you for interviewing me and letting me speak my feelings and thoughts. “The G-Files” will be out September 29th. I just want everybody to support it so we can keep bringing this good music to the game. http://raptalk.net/website/content/view/1916/54/

Raptalk.Net once again sat down with the G-Child Warren G to discuss his upcoming album "The G-Files" being released on September 29th. If you've been following the album, it's suffered a few delays so we decided to start this interview off by getting to the bottom of the reasoning behind the push backs.

Warren G also talks about the highly publicized track listing changes that were made in order to incorporate Nate Dogg, RBX and others into the album; of course, an update on the status of Nate Dogg and his health is included. With some curious about the sound of the project, Warren also took the time to discuss the overall sound of the album for all of his fans.

Fans were puzzled when two leaked singles, "Gigolo's Get Lonely 2" and "Mr. DJ" didn't make the album -- Warren G is telling you exactly why that went down.

West coast fans abruptly became angry when rumors of a possible "Regulate" remake with Akon replacing Nate Dogg came to the forefront of many websites; Warren G addresses those rumors in true G-Child fashion.

Read on for much more than that, and be sure to Enjoy...

I'm still a little down about Gigalos Get Lonely 2 not making the final cut, that was a great record.
