The family of slain pioneering hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) will receive financial support from a newly formed coalition that includes his Run-DMC group members, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, the New York City Police Department, Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Ja Rule, Ashanti, Irv Gotti, top Island Def Jam executives Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles, and others.

The group plans to pay off the mortgage for Mizell's family, cover education costs for his three children, and contribute $50,000 to a reward fund for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death. The coalition will hold a press conference Wednesday (November 6) to discuss its objectives and plan of action. The location and time have not yet been announced.

"This broad-based coalition was formed to provide immediate financial help to Jay's family," Simmons said in a statement. "Many of us lost a dear friend and an inspiration when Jay was killed. The work of the coalition is to see to it that his family gets the assistance it needs as they try to overcome this tragedy."
