My thoughts on Warren's "The G-Files"
« on: September 27, 2009, 11:36:09 PM »
Just wanted to throw this out there. When I listen to the last two Warren G albums, I get the feeling that Warren is on a real innovative tip. A lot of new sounds and radical changes that most people probably aren't ready for. I really want to embrace his sound and I think it's a good that he's taking his productions to another level, but for some reason the 'conservative' records work better for me. Take 100 miles and running and the RBX cut, those are pretty much conservative records and those are the ones people seem to love the most. It's a sad thing in a way, but that's typically the burden that a innoveters carry.

Any thoughts on this?

I can agree somewhat to a degree. Warren G has never been measured by his lyrics or raps, and still maintains the same basic flow he's had for years now, so he is obviously as we all know - going to be rated for the production on his albums..

Let's run it down briefly:

West Is Back : IMO I actually think this track is nice and mellow, yet composes in a way that sounds modern

True Star : The following track, as above. Still has a smooth vibe, but more modern and new-age

From this point it's sad to see for those who love the 90's G-Funk but at the same time, I'll still support it, it's growth, and isn't wack by any means

Lets Get High : A song which is self explanitory lol. Chilled track

I think this album is actually a good album, and I'll get round to buying it in the next couple of weeks. I can remember buying N Tha Midnight Hour same time as Trauma, and praising both Quik & Warren G for bringing a more modern feel to West Coast. This is no different. His Skate Skate track, expected to be some new electronica club shyt turned out to be one of the most laid back cuts in years lol. Warren still gives us the smooth songs on his albums, but they are more modern, and not the preferred 90's style, and his albums aren't as solid as I Want It All, or Regulate, but they are still worth the purchase
