Do you know the name of this movie?

ive been trying to figure out the name of this movie for a long fucking time now.  its OLD..last time i saw it was about 15 years ago on TV. 


this is what i remember about it...

its about a father who is raising two kids on his own.  i dont know if the mother died or what..i just remember him raising the kids alone.  i think the father worked at a garage or taxi place.  something like that.  the guys kids, a boy and girl usually go visit him at his work. 

anyway, down the line the father looses his job or something, and theyre in serious financial trouble.  something happens and the father says "more mouths to feed" to his son.  his son takes it to heart and hangs himself in the shower.  before he does that he writes on the mirror "one less mouth to feed" with a bar of soap.  i remember this scene specifically because it impacted be greatly at that age.

im also 90% sure it had "america" in the title.   

ive been trying to figure out the name of this movie and god damn it, i will not give up until i see it again.
