Jets Acquire Braylon Edwards From Browns

By GREG BISHOP
Published: October 7, 2009

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The comedy routine started before Braylon Edwards stepped inside the Jets’ locker room. Linebacker Bart Scott had hung a picture of LeBron James and a pair of boxing gloves, a reference to Edwards’s off-the-field troubles last weekend and James’s negative reaction to Edwards. Then they ridiculed the length of his suit pants, calling them “highwaters.”

The Jets remain a loose bunch, but the trade Wednesday with Cleveland for Edwards, a 26-year-old wide receiver, was a serious move for an organization that believes it can win the Super Bowl this season.

In exchange for Edwards, whose talent apparently outweighed his baggage, the Jets shipped receiver Chansi Stuckey, the special-teams standout Jason Trusnik and two draft choices to Cleveland. Edwards, who has 28 career touchdowns, but who had 16 drops last season, could face an assault charge from an incident that occurred hours after Cleveland’s overtime loss to Cincinnati.

“Our goal is to win the Super Bowl,” tight end Dustin Keller said. “Braylon gives us the best chance to do that.”

Edwards said he hoped to “brush up” his reputation, one that includes arguing with teammates, complaining about playing time or lack of offensive involvement and being late for meetings. On Sunday, Edwards was accused of assaulting a friend of James’s in Cleveland, and James labeled Edwards’s behavior as “childish.”

The Jets contacted the N.F.L. regarding a potential suspension and law enforcement officials in Ohio. Although they received no assurances from either, General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said the Jets were “comfortable” with what they were told.

Edwards, whose contract expires after the season, will be a restricted free agent in 2010 unless there is a new collective bargaining agreement by March. Edwards reiterated that he did not want to become a distraction. Instead, he said all the right things on Wednesday — about joining an organization already loaded with talent, about the toll that losing took on him in Cleveland, about how he was eager to meet with coaches.

Ultimately, though, the trade came down to potential.

“In the end, Braylon Edwards is a rare talent,” Coach Rex Ryan said. “When he’s covered, he’s still open.”

The Jets plan to start Edwards on Monday night at Miami, which theoretically would increase opportunities for Jerricho Cotchery, Keller and the rest of the offense. Against New Orleans, the Saints played man coverage almost exclusively, stacking defenders near the line of scrimmage, daring the Jets to throw.

“It’s going to help Sanchez, and not just immediately,” fullback Tony Richardson said, referring to the rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. “It’s going to help with his development.”

Never shy, Tannenbaum continues to shape a team that won three of its first four games. In the past three years, Tannenbaum has traded for running back Thomas Jones, nose tackle Kris Jenkins, quarterback Brett Favre and cornerback Lito Sheppard. Since April, he twice made trades with his former coach, Eric Mangini, first for the draft pick the Jets used to select Sanchez and now Edwards.

In the past three drafts, Tannenbaum has also traded up to select cornerback Darrelle Revis, linebacker David Harris, Keller and running back Shonn Greene.

Tannenbaum built a core from those acquisitions. The one trade that failed was for Favre, but even that helped produce an 8-3 start last season. And the Jets’ collapse led to the firing of Mangini, which led to his hiring in Cleveland, which led to Sanchez and Edwards coming to the Jets.

“I like it, but it’s a risky situation,” Jenkins said of the let’s-make-a-deal mentality. “Some things have worked out. Some haven’t. It shows his intensity, how much he wants to win.”

Jenkins revived his career by leaving an environment in Carolina that he described as filled with tension and animosity and finding a better fit with the Jets. Edwards hopes to write a similar narrative. He called the trade a “fresh start” and a “clean slate.”
Aside from Cotchery, the Jets have relied on a mostly anonymous group of receivers. Cotchery has caught 23 passes, and the rest of the receivers have combined for 14 receptions.

Ryan said he viewed Cotchery and Edwards as No. 1 receivers. Scott said he felt bad for the teammates who had been shipped to Cleveland, who went from a winning team into “exile, Fort Knox, zero wins and whatever.”

Tannenbaum played down the immediacy of the move, saying he learned a long time ago that teams are never one player away. But. ...

“We keep bringing in big-name players,” Revis said. “That just shows the organization wants to win. We haven’t won a Super Bowl since Joe Namath. This is a new era.”
