Crash (2004) - Paul Haggis
http://www.foriegnmoviesddl.com/2008/06/crash-2004-paul-haggis.html

Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.

A lot of people thought I was just being a hater. And I do tend to go against the grain a lot. I was the one kid in my elementary school cheering against the Blue Jays in their two World Series wins. I naturally tend to see the other side of something when everyone else seems to be in agreement.

But in the case of Crash; I simply did not like it. I saw it first before all the hype when it was creating an internet buzz and most people didn't even know it yet. When it ended I thought "ok nothing special but its probably very deep and I need to watch it again". Then I saw it again and it was even worse. By the third time I convinced myself it was a bad film being propped up by a message, and never looked back. When I first saw No Country I thought the same thing, but No Country got better with each viewing.

I still don't get why bunch of stupid stereotypes, impossible coincidences, after school special-like dialogue, and breaking character for the sake of plot makes for a good film, and gets called gritty and real to boot. It's like a fairy tale but it's not supposed to be. The Three Burials by Tommy Lee Jones was an amazing film that took a modern setting and a fable and merged them together. Crash did nothing well. The acting wasn't bad, but everything else sucked.

What themes exactly? I'm still not that huge on the film. The Tommy Lee scenes make it brilliant for me.

not having to think to hard, the one obvious huge one is the whole old/ young thing, how the old generation is basically being wiped clean by the new, but it is a 'creative destruction' or emerson's idea of circles, but ultimately the old has to go when the new comes, and the new has to come, i think the movie even complicates this becasue the specific thing of the 'new' they are exploring is crime, which is destructive to begin, but you dont exactly think about how crime evolves. something like that. that opening speech has a lot in it, but it comes back all the time. another apparent one is chance determinism, i mean hes flippin coins and people's lives are dependend on that

The one that really stuck out in my head was that the world stays the same but you change with age and think it isn't you but the world that is doing the changing. The Tommy Lee Jones scenes really stress that. The one scene in particular I remember is Jones and the other town sheriff complaining about "the kids today" and how all the respect is gone, etc etc etc, an that's why things like what happened can happen, but Jones later scene with his uncle clarifies everything when they talk about the crazy native that killed some member of their family decades before. The idea is that this isn't a country for old men because as they age and become wise they realize how bad some things are that they didn't see when they were young.

Think of it like this; you're in grade 8 and you hear some 7th grade slut is blowing guys in the boys washroom. You may or may not partake in it for whatever reasons but more often than not you think it's cool and the main reason any 8th grade boy wouldn't go in would be because they are nervous. We're in our 20s now. How cool is the idea of a 13 year old girl blowing multiple guys in a washroom? What would you think of the fact that your young cousin or niece may be doing that? Fast forward 20 years and it's your daughter, 30 more years and it's your grand daughter. The simple facts of life get more and more disgusting as we age. We change. The "country" stays the same.

That's the theme I saw that made me love the film. I'll watch it again with your themes in mind.
