Sometimes life imitates art. And sometimes, it's impossible to make a distinction between the two. MF Grimm is an emcee who allows every aspect of his life to be captured brilliantly in his work, from his debut verse on KMD's Black Bastards, to his overdue debut album, The Downfall Of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera. Despite the tragic 1994 shooting that left him in a wheelchair, and the negativity throughout his life, he still has a lot to say, and a lot more excellent music in store for the hip hop world. I was able to correspond with him recently via snail mail, during his stay at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility.
Nikhil: First off, how is everything going with you during your bid? What are some of the things you do to make your time in prison more of a positive experience than it might otherwise be?
MF Grimm: I make the best of it. I use this time wisely; most of the time I study sign language, I really love it, I want to improve. I'm able to have musical equipment in this facility, so I have a little drum machine now. I'm learning how to make beats without samples and it's fun to me. It kills so much time, and I think I'm getting pretty good at it. My writing has matured I've noticed, I don't think you'll ever hear "Grimm Reaper" again. I'm not too keen on violence in my music as much, there's other things that I can talk about. There's like 10 million emcees out there rhyming about killing you, killing his fans, killing anyone who look at him, taking over blocks, taking cities, his jewels are better than yours, his car's better, his girls are finer than yours, he can take your girl any time he want; but not too many touch topics that we need as human beings, as brothers and sisters in this universe. No matter race or color, unity is everything. "They" love keeping all of us apart. Talking about things that stimulate the mind. I want to be allowed to grow as an artist by anyone who appreciates my creations without being considered selling out by not talking about killing people; I'm not an angel but 95% of me is tired of people dying in violent ways. I know I have a little left in me but I'm working on changing it. To sum it up I feel prison has made me more powerful as a human and set free MF Grimm from the chains that was holding his brain hostage. Time will tell all!
