Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/4/2010April 07, 2010 11:04:00 AM CDT   |   by Allen Jacobs

Four new Rap releases found their way to the charts last week. The highly-publicized Def Jam release of Wu-Tang Clan member trio Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon, Wu-Massacre, entered the charts at #12. Raekwon's first dealing with the famed New York imprint sold just under 40,000 units, with special packaging and production from RZA and Mathematics.

A west coast veteran, E-40 had three chart entries. After a career with Jive and more recently Reprise/Warner Brothers Records, the Vallejo, California slang-master went to EMI to distribute his companion albums, Revenue Retrievin' Day Shift and Night Shift. Released separately, both editions sold approximately 12,000 units. Additionally, in a double packaging, the Sick Wid It founder sold 5,000 more of each release, which feature numerous guests.

Neighbor to E-40, Sacramento's Brotha Lynch Hung returned for a second week of his Strange Music debut, Dinner and a Movie. After reports published on DX yesterday that the comeback album was under-bought by retailers, the veteran emcee cleared 10,000 units.

Lastly, led by Jedi Mind Tricks' Vinnie Paz, super-group Army of the Pharaohs charted with their third release, The Unholy Terror. With members including Apathy, Reef The Lost Cauze, Celph Titled and Esoteric, this release marked the group addition of former Canibus protege Journalist. Released through Babygrande Records/Enemy Soil, the AOTP album coincides with the group's ongoing tour with JMT.

I knew this, it's gonna flop harder than the original album. Will Priority soon see that they are wastin' money?

A re-release honestly cant flop.
And it debuted at 29 last week sellin 15 thousand units, and thats good when you consider that its a re release and his first week sales from MIW. And MIW is still sellin so MIW will probably have sold 300 Thousand by the summer.

So im pretty sure that isnt a waste of money for Priority.  ;)

As if i know all of that info.
Thing is, everyone these days is sellin lower then what they use to sell.
So i dont know why your just singlin out snoop when basically the whole industry isnt makin that many sells.

But im sure you see his two singles (Gangsta Luv & I Wanna Rock) chartin very well, so if you wanna talk about how much money theyre makin, then you need to talk about that also, because both of those songs got into the top 40.  ;)

you know what i think,..... the teenie boppers and mainstream pop audience will buy pop singles of snoop, but they dont buy the albums.
the snoop fans are not buyin the singles or the album coz its selling out to pop, rnb & the other rap genres, instead of staying true to westcoast gangsta shit.
snoop never had a strong selling single for "tha last meal" , but the album sold double platinum, because the album was keepin it westcoast through and through.
snoop has the ability to make another dope straight westcoast sounding album, with only dpg family features, and a selected few of other westcoast artist features, and he can go  platinum + again. he doesnt even need a big single. he just needs to keep it straight westcoast on the album, with quality westcoast producers like warreng, daz, soopafly, meech, battlecat, fredwreck, dj pooh, dj quik, terrace martin, aswell as a beat or two by dr dre and it will sell like hotcakes. snoop needs to stop trying to follow whats hot in pop, and stay on that westcoast gangsta shit. tha last meal was a success, and then for some reason he felt the need to go pop-rnb on the next album and onwards up until now. as they say,.... if it aint broke, then dont fix it. snoop needlessly changed his style in an attempt to stay popular, when he didnt need to in the first place. snoop was selling fine before he went pop. now he's struggling to get much past 300k in units sold of MIW, and the repackaged album "more malice" flopped terribly.

look at ice cube,.... he's seen the light, and that's why he's releasing his upcoming album "i am the west" with just straight westcoast sounding music through the whole album. he's doin it on the independant, and i bet he'll go gold, and with some good promo, its possible for him to go platinum. how ice cube's upcoming album will sell will be a testament to the whole westcoast that you dont need to sell out by making a pop-rnb/dirtysouth/eastcoast sounding album, but you can make a straight westcoast sounding album, and sell good numbers.

time for snoop to quit kidding himself, and go back to that gangsta shit, and the fans, and westcoast music listners will make him go platinum again.

same goes for g-dubb who has chosen to take the same sellout route as snoop lately
