If the NBA wants to increase TV ratings why don't they...
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:28:15 PM »
Forget the stupid rules and incompetent refs for a second, and just do some things that seem a little obvious.

1) Show more games on national television. ABC doesn't show any games until Christmas and then after that it is no more than 1 or 2 games a week.
2) Work something out with the NHL so that they don't have their finals at the same time.

More nationally telivised games would be huge. If you are the conspiracy theory type...then creating a Lakers/Celtics finals is a good way to go. Also, they need to make sure the Knicks become relevant (LeBron). AND, creating more rivalries is always good. The NBA has become too fuckin nice. Remember back in the day...you had all of the elements to make it successful. You had ONE dominate player who was also the face of the league and sport (Jordan). You had the Bulls being great (big media market). You had the torch being passed from Magic to Jordan basically, so LA was still competitive (big media market). The Knicks were Jordans number 1 nemesis (big media market). The games were physical and intense. You had rivalries where you felt like the teams genuinly hated eachother. Now its like everybody is friends with everyone else. Fuck that.

^True. But the league can't control a lot rivalries, and big names on big markets (they can only influence the playoffs if you believe in the conspiracy theories). Simple shit like finding a TV channel that is willing to broadcast more games would instantly increase ratings and revenue. After football season, the NBA should go all out on Sundays.

Im all for eliminating games during the regular season between conferences. Like how baseball used to be before interleague play. During the regular season, the Western Conference only plays the Western Conference....and likewise for the Eastern Conference. This increases the potential for rivalries in your conference as you will be playing teams more often. It also (IMO) creates far more anticipation for the finals when you are watching two teams play against eachother (the best from the West and the best from the East) who havent met all year yet.

nba needs to make it just 2 halves instead of 4 quarters which 1st and 3rd are the least watched, people always tune in and out and they mostly watch end of the game

also, they need to quit calling stupid fouls when someone barely gets touched, or stupid hip checks or whatever

take away 2 free throw rules; they should only get 2nd if they make the first

another bad rule...people would foul bad shooters on every play.
